After recently losing my lungfish when it decided to go for a walk on the fishroom floor i decided to treat myself to a new fish to fill the empty tank so i went out and got this little guy from wildwoods

Gulper/ogre catfish, Asterophysus batrachus

Ive been wanting one of these from the first time i ever saw them on the web but whenever they were available the prices were too much for me but this time i had the cash so i snapped it up in a second.

While i was there i spotted these too and couldnt resist buying one

Vulture catfish, Calophysus macropterus

WOW - speaking as a total newbie they are awesome. Are they fully grown or will they get bigger?

wow those are BIG

Big? They're all babbies and are only between 4 and 6 inches long each

They will all get bigger, the B.platynemum should reach around 24 inches, the C.macropterus around 20 inches and the gulper only around 10 inches

what size tank is it
btw nice!

The gulper and the vulture cat are in a divided 30 gallon which serves as a quarentine tank as both fish are very newly imported and were still in the shops quarentine room, in a few weeks the vulture cat will be moved out to a 80g tank and the gulper will have the 30g to itself until it outgrows it. The B.platyemum is in another 30 gallon while it grows large enough to be safely added to one of the larger tanks but they are extreemly slow growers so it will probably be in there for the next year at least.

great pics CFC, your photography skills are getting better

Very, very nice. Loving the vulture and the Brachyplatystoma. Im not so much of a fan of gulpers, however they are pretty amazing...
Are Brachyplatystoma platynemum imported regulary? Im looking for something large to go into a tank which should be available to me in the next couple of years, over say two years how much would a 5" specimin grow would you say?
Good quailty pics aswell :good:

The B.platynemum are like gold dust, a handfull get imported into the country each year (it is actually illegal to export them from their native country :shifty: ) I had to wait 3 years to finally get my hands on one after the first one i had reserved died in quarentine and i wasnt quick enough on the phone to get the next two that came in. Growth so far has been very very slow, in the 3 months ive had mine it has grown maybe half and inch in length.

Not a fan of gulpers!!! wash your mouth out with soap :grr:

Yeah I sent you a PM about that little "issue" :shifty:
Can I ask where you got it from? Wouldnt mind having a go finding one myself...
Sounds like theyre pretty fragile then, still wouldnt mind a go.

Cheers, Mike
