I'm thinking of going salty and wondered what you experts thought of this idea.

I have a FRF-2100 (approx 210ltr)
and was thinking of converting this to a marine system
the design of the hood allows for a protien skimmer to be
used and the trickle filter system could be used for rawaphos etc.
atm I have no desire to go the sump route, so the live rock would be
in the tank.

I'm torn between going for a reef system and a fish only one.

on the coral side I like pussy corals and mushrooms
and fire corals but on the fish side I like green chromis, gobies,
some of the wrasses, bicolour in particular and shrimps.

I'm after ideas on what you would do in a less than ideal tank
like this?

sounds good!

the descision to go reef of FOWLR rests on a couple of issues

lighting - if you've not got metal halides your severley limiting what corals you can get, you can get away with some corals with power compacts but on the whole MH's are the way to go. so look at the hood of your tank, if it can easily be adapted for MH and you don't mind paying the extra money then your OK.

fish selection - there are a number of fish that aren't 'reef safe' so will munch on your corals. so do some research into fish, if there's some you really really want and they're not reef safe then there's your descision made for you

difficulty - you do need to be a bit more careful with water parameters and maintenance etc if your going to have corals.... but I don't think it's too hard for you... I figure if I can manage it most people can, you've already got fish so your used to maintenance etc, so long as your prepared to research and work at it you'll be OK. so don't worry over how hard it is.

:D

Your fish coral list sound find. The corals you mention will be fine under a bank of T8's (the Fire coral (I think you meen the SPS from the red sea) will be a no no because of the high lighting level and calcium addition you'll need to take on) ther fish you have taslked aboput should be fine. Some wrasse like to nip corals and clams but usualy soft corals are fine (the muchrooms don't tast good anyway)

With the tank 210l is a good start. You'll need 20-30kgs of LR. What length and depth is the tank? what lighing have you got already?

Then theres the water and salt what are your thoughts? Do you have a LFS where you can by RO?

These are a cople of thing to get you going.

What length and depth is the tank?
39"L x 19.5"W x 19.5"H

what lighing have you got already?
currently has 2xT8's but I could easily adapt the unit into T6s, not as good as T5s but far superiour to T8s.
Failing that I could proberbly get an overtank luminare extreamly cheap from Arcadia. :hey:

I work in a LFS that sells RO, so I'd have a free supply. ;)

all is looking good then!

Whats your buget? may I ask? If you could spend a bit on a skimmer in the outlay that would be good, also get yourself some powerheads. Also some sort of storage for the RO. Also look at work for some good bits of LR and put them aside for yourself!

When are you going to be starting?

Come on now children!

the skimmer would proberbly be a TMC V2 appropriate for the volume of water.
as I work in a lfs budget is not really a concern as I can blagg most of the stuff at trade+VAT ;)

LOL PUSSY CORAL

The marine section is getting funnier everyday :fun:

I had to laugh at that too. :p
EDIT: I think its funny that the only people commenting on it are from cali

You're welcome here The-Wolf, if only because you love bichirs as I do :D

You know you had to giggle a little bit at that! You don't see that stuff around here that often

And a heads up for wrasses, they like to jump, so you'll need either a hood or some eggcrate for the top of your tank if you decide to go that route :).

THats a good beginner tank size, you dont want one too deep cause its hard to light and hard to reach the bottom of :). As for lighting, do you have any place that you can get marine spectrum T6 tubes? Wasn't aware they were made in 10000k and higher color temps

I can special order the T6s from a wholsaler, I'm not sure on the K rating but I think they are around 10,000.
I'll check on that first.

clowns and a big pussy .... coral :hey:
