I'm currently starting completely over. I'm going to change the gravel to sand hopefully as I'm planning on acquiring three dwarf puffers. On occupants as of right now, snails, the tank isn't cycled, but whatever. Just snails, I guess.

Any suggestions? Advice?

thats acctually quite nice for plastic set up, but you wouldnt get the water cleaning help of live plants.

nice though.

Thank you very much! I'm a completely newbie to this, so that means a lot. I'm thinking of eventually getting some Java Fern to replace a few plastic ones.

thats a good idea, i'm kinda new too, ive kept coldwater fish and they were not as interesting as tropicals!

how will you cycle the tank?

To be honest, I'm not sure yet. I still have to replace the gravel, so when I replace it with sand, I'll have to start over in some ways. I'll probably do a fishless cycle, or probably give Bio-Spira a shot and see if that helps. I have four snails (that I can see) that are TINY but I'm assuming they grow, so they might help a tiny bit. Worst comes to worst (saying Bio-Spira doesn't work, etc), I'll do a fishless cycle. It'd be ideal to have a hardy fish to cycle with but could also live with Dwarf Puffers, sadly, the only ones that go well with Puffers are Otos (too fragile for cycling), Ghost Shrimp (don't think they'd help cycle), and snails.

EDIT: Could anyone help I.D. these snails? Thank you very much!

im on day 4 of my fishless cycle, i have some nitrites and the nitrate has gone up but the ammonia doesnt clear that quickly so i guess ill be waiting a while

ill enjoy being able to stock most fish when the cycle finishes though, and i dont have to worry about the ammonia or nitrite being too high for the fish doing the cycling.

For plastic plants your tank looks really nice except the little plants at the front are maybe a little bit too uniform in their distance from each other, you know a bit of a straight line?

Thanks so much! Yeah, see, they're all on the same platform, I did cut some of the platforms up so I could seperate them. Maybe I'll cut each plant away from the platform? Hm, thank you again!

Yeah, fishless cycles tank pretty long, but from what I've read, it's worth it in the end. So hang in there, you got a few more weeks left. Good luck to you!

Make hidey-holes/caves for the dwarf puffers. Provide at least 1 per puffer, and put them as far away from each other as possible to avoid territorial issues. Tiny pots will do! :)

Thanks for the tips! I actually have many rock decorations coming in the mail, I'll end up replacing most plastic plants with those decorations and make "caves" using small glass jars. I've used them before with my Betta and it worked great. Thanks so much!

The main reason plants are a plus to the aquarium is to get rid of nitrates and to add oxygen to the water. So they dont really "filter" the tank.

Personally i prefer live plants, but that tank looks really nice anyways.

Thank you very much! I only have Java Moss in there at the moment, but soon I'll have 1 or 2 Java Ferns as well.

EDIT: Added ALL plants I own, doubt most will stay once I get deocrations and Java Fern.

However....real plants can begin to die and then cause water quality to decrease due to the amount of vegitition decomposing within the tank.

Thats why you take the dead vegitation out, do water changes, and use easy growing plants like java moss and java ferns. Owned. 8)
