Hi ! I always purchased local java moss available at a sorta like pet flea market here in the philippines, and i always wondered why it did not grow all hairy and light green ! then after i went to thailand and purchased a few shrimps there the kind thai LFS owner gave me bits of java moss for the shrimp to sit it while i bring them home to the philippines, i planted those java moss bits and they grew hairy and bright green! this led me to believe that the local java moss is a diff species..

this is the local java moss

what moss sp. do you think it is ? is it xmas moss ? or no?

my first thought was xmas moss as well. the thai stuff is exactly the same as the stuff i have.

i much prefer your original batch though. looks far superior IMO

me too im thinking its xmas moss too! its really cheap though... 20 pesos for a bag full and i mean FULL!! thats around er..... $0.20 hehe might be a naturally occuring xmas type moss sp. here in the phil.

il research on xmas moss more and see if it is the same

Dont think its Xmas moss, try HERE to see if you can identify it.

thanks zig ! well now i really dont know what moss it is ! hehehe :D il do a bit more research ! so many kinds of moss ! i really like the weeping moss from that page

I think thats the problem Kenneth, there are literally thousands of different verities of moss so its hard to identify them.

>stegoodall> Hard to tell from the pictures but each main strand of Christmas moss tapers off into a point like an xmas tree, hence the name.

>jkc> I dont know anywhere offhand in the UK that sells different types of moss, Tropica sell Christmas moss but whether you have a good Tropica plant dealer near you i dont know, you could try the Birstall website, they are Tropica dealers or maybe keep an eye on ebay, but from what i can see from looking at members tanks here, mosses other than Java are rare or hard to get in the UK.
