how big do zebra plecos get, how much do they usually cost and what tank mates are compatible with them? thanks :good:

They get to 4-5"....

They are rather expensive - fry sell at £80 ish for a 1" example....
Adults can sell for upto £300 for a mature female..

The do best in a species breeding project - nothing to compete for food or hassle them...

Have you seen the pinned topic in the plecs section... there are a lot of attractive alternatives ;)

Not sure where you live and how much you're prepared to pay but there's a guy currently selling a group of four adults in the Friday-Ad (go to their website, choose the Uckfield region - which is in East Sussex incidentally - and click on Aquatics under Pets & Livestock)

i thought about getting one until the lfs told me how much they were he wanted 180 quid for a 3 inch one known my luck spend all that money and it will die just my luck that is

what l number are you talking about?
we are selling zebra plecs for £30

I'd be very surprised if that was the case....and I think word would of spread by now and you'd have hundreds of people outside your door lol.

£30? That's cheap!
I assume he means L046 - as in smithrc's avatar

I doubt it ;)

Sorry, don't think I made myself clear.
When I said "£30 - that's cheap" - I meant that's a ridiculously cheap amount for an L046 (the type that the original poster Tankman2 was asking about, I believe).

Smithrc - isn't there another plec with zebra in the name - chocolate zebra or something similar?
Maybe they're the ones that Cane has for sale in his shop?

There are quite a few 'zebra' named plecs and yes a chocolate zebra is one of them. Fish shops and importers too no doubt stick the word 'zebra' onto any striped plec they can, as they can then add on another twenty or thirty quid to the sale price.

Hi

Is anyone breeding these fish in the UK and have some for sale?

Even if i could find one in a shop i would be reluctant to buy it and encourage the illegal trade.

What illegal trade? The only ones you will see in shops are ones that are captive bred or adults that were already in captivity before the ban and have been sold by their owners, if there were any illegal trading going on they would be easier to get hold of.

There is an illegal trade in zebra's.....they are being smuggled into Peru and shipped out from there. Having said that, I don't think many, if any, of them make it into this country, most I imagine are shipped straight to Asia. There are other ways of shipping them out of Brasil also.

and in answer to the original question...yes there are several people attempting to breed them in this country, some are more successful than others and the numbers being produced still aren't anywhere near enough to cope with demand.
