Do zebra and nugget plecos do well in community tanks? Im thinking of getting 1 of each and putting them in a community tank. But before I do that, I need to make sure if they will do ok. Will they? :/ I sure hope so. They're both such gorgeous fish.

If you can get real Zebra plecs then you are very lucky. If they AREN'T real then correct them and insist they drop the price as it is not worth as a zebra pleco ;) . Look on PlanetCatfish.com or type in "Zebra Plec L046" into Google to see pictures of what the real one looks like.

They are community fish but they both really like to be in groups. Gold Nuggets are renowned for being quite a recluisive pleco, and zebras like to be in groups in fairly fast flowing water.

If it is a real zebra - it should not really be in a community tank - they prefer higher temps and wont compeat for food. they should really be kept in small groups as they prefer the comapy of their own.

And as ben says - they are unlikely to be true Zebra - as they are now the sort of fish most people would by - at $300 each (as your in the US)

So would maybe just 1 gold nugget do fine? or are they just litttle monsters?

I think I know were I can get some real Zebra Plecs. I live near this HUGE fish warehouse. They actually put pride in there work unlike some LFS . So should I get them or not? Is it a bad Idea, or should I give it a try? I really really want them. My community tank is only going to have some gouramis, sharks, and other catfish, the rest are undecided.

not being nasty - but zebras are not a fish for beginners - they are quite fussy fish that are also quite sensative.

I know I still dont want to think about loosing one once i've got them

I edited my post too late before people could see  I didnt see your post above it explaining how rare and expensive the true zebras were :p

So, Is 1 Golden Nugget in a community aquarium fine? or will it be a little monster to the rest of the fish?

Like many other fish, individual personalities of plecos can vary widely. Not to deter you, but I have a Gold Nugget (L081) and I think he may be a small terror. He constantly torments an L260 twice his size, and I have also caught him taking a few charges at my ghost knife... in a heavily planted 75 gal tank with lots of hidey caves.

Gold Nuggets can be territorial bottom dwellers, temper this with your current tank stock. Many people keep them without problems.

Thankyou for the advice :) I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens
