Fish Fanatic
My best friend back home has a 55 US g. tank that has been running for nearly 3 years with tropical community fish (tetras mostly). He does regular water changes and vacs the gravel. Sunday morning everything was fine when he left for his hockey game, when he got home (about 2 hours) the tank was extremely cloudy and just over half the fish were dead. He hasn't added any new fish for about 3-4 months. He did a water change of just over half the tank on Sunday, but the tank was still cloudy Monday with 5 more dead fish.
He runs an undergravel filter and a HOB filter. He also has a bubble bar running. Everything was working properly, mech. speaking.
He does not have a test kit, so I told him to get the water tested ASAP and to continue with 20%-30% water changes daily.
It sounded to me like something happened to the bio filter killing the bacteria. Only I cannot think of what may have caused it.
Any ideas on the matter? I will be talking to him tomorrow to get more info about the water test results.
Thanks.
