hello everyone i have a 9 inch common pleco that is about 7 years old im moving it in 2 a 5ft x 2ft x 2ft tank can i have more than 1 pleco in their an if i did would he/ she fight with any others i did have a baby golden nugget but it died about 6 months ago for some unknown reason didnt look as if it had be attacked

i cant see that being a prob long as there 2 places for them both to go and hide as if theres only 1 place and they both want it then you may have a prob my 2 plecs seem well ok in my 4ft tank ones about your size and the other a bit smaller i am upgrading to a 6ft tank but how it is at the mo they both get on fine

yer there the same ( common plecs ) my big one i got as someone did not have the right size tank so i took him on he just seems to sit under the drift wood most the time when lights are on the smaller one is always about cleaning the tank they get on fine its nice to watch them both cleaning the glass side by side :D when the moon lighting is on

It all depends on the plec - tank is big enough definitely, and you generally shouldn't have a problem. But then there's the odd occasion where you get a plec who doesn't like other plecs in their space. Usually sorts out after initial scuffles. At least I'm hoping so (says Lisa who's new royal has just been initiated by her grumpy arsed common).

The average sizes we read about are just that - averages. Could be any number of factors why this plec didn't reach the average 12-18" (I've only ever seen 2ft commons in large breeding ponds - never in an aquarium, so that's not the best guesstimate to go by for the average fish keeper - the top end of average for a fish tank specimen would be 18", but more commonly 12-15"). Could be a runt, could have been in a small tank, could be a rehome where the previous owners/fish shop kept it in a small tank or overcrowded, might have been the underdog in the race for food, whatever. I dont think it's fair to judge without knowing. And sometimes not everyone knows how big these fellas get or what size tank they need - until they come to places like this and learn from people who tell them how it is (unlike your average LFS!).

If, and I say if, this plec has been in a small tank which has lead to it being a little stunted, we've still got to hand it to the guy for getting him a decent sized tank now - it's much better than most commons get in their lifetimes. :good:

You have me all wrong, I wasn’t having a go but I was just curious. Well done about getting a new tank for the fellah :good:
