As if I have not had enough problems with the 40 gallon, I went out of town for 4 days and when I got home just now, the water is yellow! I thought this only happened with unboiled driftwood, which I have none of. All I have is a rock and a bunch of fake plants...WHAT IS WORNG WITH THIS TANK?

Sounds like a algae bloom. It normaly is bright green, but can be yellow to white. Was your lights on while you was gone. If it is a algae bloom first find what caused it and fix that. If you got a half was good filter it will clear the water. There is also many chemical fixes but I am not real big on adding stuff to my tanks.

My lights were on for about 10 hours a day...I thought my filter was supposed to be a good one (Penguin 330), but I have had nothing but water problems for 2 months now.

IMO penguin are crap (maybe harsh) but not the best you could have purchased.
Invest in a emperor. However, penguin can clear prob up. Do a water change, try some activated carbon

It's all figured out...hopefully. It appears to be a phosphate issue. The activated carbon has done nothing for me but I added 2 new filter media (Phosguard and Purigen) and overnight the tank is clear.

I have been frusterated for 7 weeks and that's all it took. CRAZY tank.
