we noticed our finger leather wasn't really opening up to it's full potential so decided to move it where there's a bit more flow to see if that's the problem. shifted it and the new position was fairly close to the fiji leather, maybe 4/5" away from each other. The fiji didn't open at all the following day so I moved the finger leather a little further away from it last night, now maybe 5/6" away from each other. It still didn't open last night but then again i had my hands in the tank and was tinkering which could explain it.

Is it likely that these two coral's won't get on? If so how far apart should we put them? Will it do the fiji much harm if it doesn't open for a couple of days while we're moving things around and finding a spot for the finger leather?

If it's not opened tonight i'll do some water tests as well, doubt if there's any problems but it never hurts to rule it out! Is there anything in particular that the fiji would be sensitive to so we should test for?

thanks :good:

Most leathers are very tolerant of one another, prolly just all the tinkering thats got em miffed at you ;). Give em a few days before you really worry

fair enough, will give them a day or two like this, if they're still not happy come the end of the weekend we'll see if we can find somewhere else for them.

i remember reading somewhere that they can throw a wobbly if they're too close but it didn't give any details of which leathers don't like others etc.

Actually leathers typically dont use stinging tentacles. They compete via alleopathy, not nematocysts. The tentacles on leather corals are not full of stinging cells at all, in fact many are devoid of them. What leathers try and do is release chemicals directly into the water column to stunt the growth of competitors. However because they lack nematocysts of their own they are typically vulnerable to other stronger corals like euphyllia, bubbles, etc

well they're both sorta half opening but not properly now :/ just gonna give them a bit more time

Are they both in a lot of flow? I don't see why they wouldn't open, they aren't really aggresive to one another..

moderate to good flow, the fiji leather's been fine and always opened so i assume conditions must be fine where it was. finger leather wasn't opening properly so we moved it to a high flow spot near the other leather.
