I know we're only supposed to have 1 male per tank, what about 1 of each species? Are they different enough or not? I can't find much info on that.

Thanks :D

Well, funnily enough I had the same dilemma, I have a yellow assessor and wanted to add a Blue one, I was advised against it as the yellow one had been in the tank for some months. I don't know how they would get along if added at the same time, I think it would be a 'give it a go and see what happens'
Sorry can't be more help than that really :blush:

Whether this will help or not I have no idea.

In Reef Secrets Alf Nilsen and Svein Fossa on page 85 under aquarium stocking is a biotope suggestion of creating a red sea cave. They admit the yellow assessor is from australia but include it as they like to be upside down in caves. The tank size is 190 liter or 50 gallon. Along with the Orchid dottyback and blue stripe dottyback they add 15 yellow assessors (at the same time) along with 25 dancing shrimp. The shrimps group on the roof of the cave and you see the yellow assessors swiming with their bellies to the roof.

I knew somewhere I had read about these, it came to me where in a bolt of inspiration. I am presuming they are OK as they were all added at the same time.

Thanks TI. I've read where it's possible to shoal them with a larger tank. My tank is only 29g, though. I didn't know if similar body shape was enough to disqualify the attempt. About the only difference is the color, I think.

Yeah, that's a gray area for sure KJ. If you do want to try it, your only hope really is to add them simultaneosly IMO. Letting one or the other estabilsh a territory and then bringing in a second assessor to the mix is asking for trouble IMO

Maybe I should try to aquire these before my clowns then.

What I plan is to set up 2 QT tanks and aquire the assessors as I can. QT them individually to make sure they're healthy and feeding and then eventually adding them to the DT at the same time. Another issue is maybe not being able to find one or the other for while since I think they're seasonal fish. Maybe I'll try.

Greetings,<Salud!>
I've been a huge fan of WWM for some time now and I recommend people come here to find information. I'm finally stumped on something. I would like to keep a Yellow Assessor and Blue Assessor together (Assessor flavissimus and Assessor macneilli) in a 30g.
<Mmm... though diminutive in size, these Plesiopsids can be rather pugnacious if crowded>
I've read if one wants to keep a shoal to have them in a larger tank and make sure to have only 1 male. I don't want a shoal and want to know if the 2 species are different enough to keep together. Basically if they would ignore each other an go about their business.
<I don't "give you good odds" here>
A bit of tank history/information. I have about 25lbs of live rock with current stocking consisting of 2 yasha gobies with a red banded pistol shrimp.
<Nice!>
I was thinking about maybe adding 2 Picasso percula's at some point also.
<Mmm, this is about all I'd add here fish-wise>
Tank has been set up and running great for 3 months now (since mid-March). My live rock was cured in the tank in 2 weeks and I added my current fish in the middle of April. Please let me know your thoughts on this scenario. Keep up the great work guys/gals.Korrine
<Thank you... Bob Fenner>

Not sure I would risk it in your size tank, the blue is more aggressive than the yellow and as they mature there is likely to be trouble :blink:

Hello,

I just wanted to share that I had wanted to keep these fish for a long time, and finally was able to get my hands on some. My tank is a 58 gallon packed full of some very nice rock so there are tons of caves for hiding. I added two yellows and 3 blues. One of the three blues was lost in the first couple weeks, but since then they have coexisted for around 6-8 months. I can tell you that the yellows and blue definitely don't care for each other, and they will either avoid each other or dart aggressively at each other, but they fortunately have been doing very well, and have been very cool to watch. If anybody wants to check them out PM me, as my tank gallery is on my facebook page.

We would all be interested in hearing about your experience and seeing photos :good: would you be kind enough to post some pictures and tell us about your tank, size, stocking etc

nearly forgot :hi: to the salty side of TFF
