Ok i know this is a tropical fish forum, but i cnt seem to find anywhere that helps with yabbies

I have two blue claw yabbies and i have just noticed one has a bunch of eggs under his/her tail.

I have many questions so,

Does the male or female carry the eggs?

It has had the eegs for two days, how much longer till they hatch?

KNowing it has eggs, are they already fertilized or is there another process they need to go through?

Will the big yabbies eat the babies once they are born?

Quick response will help?

hi there
the female will be carrying eggs, she will have mated with the male and he would have left his, erm, stuff on her belly, then within 24hours she would have laid her eggs, rubbing them through the males deposit on her belly to fertilise them.
if i remember correctly, they should take around 10-12 weeks to hatch depending on temp and water conditions.
the little ones will keep hold of mum for a short while after.
then when they let go, is when your problems will start. not only will the parents try to eat them, but they will eat each other too (as will any fish big enough to snack on them, if you keep fish with them)
you have two choices, catch as many babies as possible and keep them in seperate containers (baring in mind you could have up to 1000 of the wee ones) or provide plenty of shelter/hiding places and let nature takes its course, with the biggest strongest ones surviving

hope this helps :)
we do have a section which yabbies fall under, will go find the link for you :)

Thank you so much!!! 10-12 weeks is a long time!!! but it will be worth the wait, soon ill be moving my fish into a 3 ft tank, just setting it up and gonna start the cycle on monday, so once they have moved i guess i could keep the 2 yabbies in the smaller tank till the eggs hatch than leave the youngans in the smaller tank moving parents into larger tank hopefully avoiding the babies from becoming dinner!!!

Cheers
