WOW...just read the methods this guy uses to get his prize winning bettas. Talk about too lazy to breed lines.

I dunno whether Bettas feel pain when they have fins cut, but isn't it considered an open wound??

I got to this website cause I saw his auction at Aquabid under crowntails

Edit: Sorry for double post

yeah, some people do that to increase a fish's finnage, or to "repair" finnage that has been chewed up during breeding. it's also a method to stop fin rot that doesn't respond to medication.

There are more reasons to "trim" a tail and some of them are actually good reasons...but doing it to cheat at a show is just despicable. And if they really do this and then sell the fish and the breeders buying the fish wind up with surprise broods then that's just wrong wrong wrong!!
And as for fish not feeling pain....that's never been proven that they don't feel pain. It has been debated to death here in the forums and elsewhere, but it's never been proven for a fact that they do not feel pain.

wow what a joke modifying a Betta to win a show.......... do these people have no shame how could you take pride in cheating and also all those Breeders out there who spend so much time and effort breeding the Betta correctly to get beaten by a fake/cheat

I don't see any prob with trimming the tail in cases of fin rot etc but doing it to cheat at a show is disgusting!

Yeah I thought this was pretty bad when I was reading it. I was thinking about the people buying it for the "looks". I mean aren't the tails going to grow back?

I'm guessing its like us cutting our hair or nails

What an unethical thing to do. I think these people forget that Bettas are living creatures and should not be treated as mere objects for looking at. It's one thing to do such a thing for medical reasons, as a last resort, but it's another to do it for looks. How can anyone presume that they know what a Betta thinks of such an experience. I'm also sure that this could put a Betta at risk of infection. You'd probably find that this person keeps his Bettas in cups, not feeling any guilt about the zero quality of life many of these show Bettas are subjected to.

even if it doesn't hurt, you still have to take them out of water and subject them to being dried out, stressed, losing their slime coat / scales and not to mention suffocation.

Flipping heck, docking dogs tails is bad enough, now trimming of fish tails. Bullcrap can't that hurt them!! even if the cutting is a pressure over pain being out of the water to be snipped aint going to be no ride in the park is it ... on top of that bet they don't lay their nice and still for it. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I feel sorry for the people that work really hard to get a top quality betta only to be beaten by a fake. Months / years of hard work and breeding overlooked but a cut n shut done in a matter of an hour or two
