Well, the other day a friend called and said he was getting rid of his 55 gallon fish tank and stand. I begged to buy it from him, as he said he was putting it in a dumpster. Then he said the sweetest words a fish fanatic can hear- "hey, I'll give it to you for free!" So he brings over this giant tank and stand, and I set it up in my room, figuring I'll have to re-cycle because the filter and all have dried up.

So today I'm driving along and I see a pet store that is going out of business. 50% of everything. I went in, and the fish guy was trying desperately to get rid of everything. I told him I had a 55 gallon tank, and would love to fill it with fish, but it was uncycled.

So he offered me a filter that had been running in HIS 55 gallon, all the gravel in his tank, a ton of ornaments, a brand new heater, and an entire tank of African Cichlids.

That's right. He insisted I take the whole tank of them. They are all about an inch long and there are about eighteen to twenty. (I figure when they get bigger I will have to rehome some of them, but I'm assuming I can get a lfs to take them) I hope I am correct in assuming that the substrate and filter is enough to cycle the tank (though I will watch readings very closely over the next few days) They are Lake Malawi cichlids (I think that's what he said) He mentioned that half of them were yellow labs (I thought that was dog breed) Of the others, one is whitish and pale, the rest are dark and striped. I have to look up on the internet what they are.

This is what I know about cichlids- they are very aggressive and they need a great deal of hiding places. My tank is packed with caves and rocks and crevices, so there are plenty of places for them to hide and stake out territory. There was a little chasing when I put them in but now they are more or less swimming around peacefully.

Oh- for this I paid 25 dollars. And he threw in two hermit crabs for my crab terrarium.

So I got - basically- a 55 gallon tank, fish, thermometer (came with it) heater, filter, gravel, stand, tons of decor (some I had, some friend gave me, some store gave me) for 25 dollars.

But here's the best part- he wants me to come tomorrow and has offered me a free 29 gallon and 20 gallon long. Both will be fully cycled, as they have been running and will come with substrate and the filter elements.

So...what star was I born under? This is awesome. I now have no idea what I will put in these new tanks.....plus the two tens that are cycling...wow.

Wow, lucky! That really is a blessing, I bet you're thrilled and probably overwhelmed. If I were in your shoes I would plan it out so that there was a lot of variety with the styles, like one being the African Cichlid theme, another having some Amazon fish such as tetras, etc. There's so many options.

Get;

10g - fry tank
10g - endlers
29g - tropical community or planted
20g long - 3 or 4 young discus and little fish
55g - malawi cichlids.

If I had those tanks, thats what I'd do

I'm not brave enough to do discus, I heard they are really fragile.

I already have a 29 gallon community tank, what I would like to do is setup a livebearer tank, heavily planted, with guppies, mollies and platys. But for now, I may have to use the tank for goldfish- about three months ago I rescued three that were living in appalling conditions and that the owner had threatened to flush. They are still really small, and have been residing in a 10 gallon tank. Too small. The 29 gallon is too small too, but will buy me some time until I have to find another home for them. Once they get too big to be feeders I am planning on bringing them back to the lfs - I have a soft spot for those little guys now, and if I bring them back now they'll end up as somebody's lunch.

I can' get endlers, I haven't ever seen them in an lfs here in the states. But guppies might be cool and definitely a fry tank

I also will h ave a 20 gallon long and possibly two 20 gallon longs I don t know what to do with.

Open to suggestions!

wow!

Well done on your good fortune, you were definately in the right place at the right time!! :good:

Good luck with your tanks, let us know how you go :)

You could grow on some cool cichlids and sell them back to the lfs or start a breeding program and use the 20g's as the fry tanks.

That's not a bad idea. Are cichlids hard to breed? And how do I keep them from hybridizing? I have heard that that is a potential problem. I have more than one of each kind, but still.

Tiger barbs are awesome when kept in larger numbers.

If you kept 10 in the 20 long it would be pretty cool.

20g long - 3 or 4 young discus and little fish

Thats just asking for trouble, young discus are particularly sensitive and need multiple large water changes and would be stunted in a 20g.

+1

how about snake heads?

Um...not. Gigantic illegal psychotic fish are a no no

I'm sorry, I just read that over and it sounds a bit obnoxious. I'm sorry.

Thanks for the suggestion, but snakeheads are illegal in the US- some good loose in some Southern state and decimated the local population, now they are banned.
