Would You Need A Filter In A Planted Nano Shrimp Setup?

Just wondering as I have an old 15L baby biorb laying around in the garage which I thought could potentially make an interesting planted shrimp setup. I wouldn't want the UGF though and with the tank being so small, no filter would probably be the best aesthetically. Would shrimp, with such low bioloads, need a filter in such a setup?

Oh, and just out of interest, what shrimp are fine kept at room temperature?

Not sure if this will ever actually happen, but it's something that's popped up in my mind.

Thanks

Shrimps are sensitive to changes in water. Having no filter would mean a regular w/c schedule to remove nasties therefore resulting in fluctuations in the water.

IMO get a filter, you can get small sponge ones these days.

you could use it without a filter, you'd have to do regular water changes though and yes Cherry shrimp do well at room temp.

Would weekly w/c's of say 30% or so be fine?

Thanks for the info :)

Had the idea today of maybe doing a nano scape sometime in an igwami sort of style, just as a little experiement to play around with a bit. Thought of a 1-2 gallon cube or something - would shrimp work in this sort of setup without a filter or heater (I'd a prefer room temp tank and avoid adding a heater for asthetic reasons if possible). Would I need a larger setup for shrimp?

Thanks

I dont know the answers to your questions, but I'm watching with interest. I've been considering setting up an unheated, unfiltered, planted shrimp setup for some time now but haven't quite gotten around to it

I actually thought today of getting an 8L TMC AquaHabitat if I ever did do a planted shrimp setup. They retail for around £50 and there's also the Fluval Spec I think I saw for around £30 (though I don't think it looks as good as the TMC, personally) and both have filters. So maybe it wouldn't be an unfiltered setup - nor unheated as I believe they both have heater compartments.
Have you considered these yourself? I noticed an article in which George Farmer set up the TMC rather nicely on the PFK site a while back.

I've got a 17L tank from P@H that I've been considering making into a shrimp tank. It came with a filter but tbh I dont want to use much electricity so if it turned out I couldn't do it unheated, unfiltered I'd probably just forget it. I'd consider having a filter on a timer to come on a few times a day to get a little water circulation but that's it.

Well from what I've gathered from the other replies, such a setup would be fine so long as you do the nescescary w/c's and cherries do fine at room temp so they wouldn't need a heater. I'd presume that variants of the red cherries (eg blues + yellows) would be fine too. I'd go for it personally, shrimp are such fascinating little things ;)
