Would This Work?

I have a MarineLand 37 gallon where the filter is integrated into the hood. The only filter media it uses is just a cartridge thats about 4x8. I was thinking of getting an aquaclear sponge and an aquaclear carbon pack and fitting them in there maybe even have to cut the sponge to fit. Would this be any better than that cartridge filter that is in there now?

The sponge might help but there is no point having carbon in the filter as it only really removes and chemicals such as medicines but it can also help remove tannins released from wood.

The carbon is only effective for a short period of time as well, maybe a few days.
