so heres one of the options i was looking at:

Arcadia Overtank Luminaire AF538F T8 120cm (48in)
Freshwater Triple T8 Tubes : 3 x 38w

I think everybody likes saving money, sorry i'm not a lighting expert, I think you should try posting in the lighting forum...

There are a lot of 48 inch shop lights out there. You could find one easily that holds 2 tubes and I'm sure there are some with 4 tubes. The lights they would use would be 40 watts each. And of course you could use 3 tubes in the one that holds 4 if you don't want that much light.

Shoplight - between $5-$15
Tubes - $5-$8 each

Then you'd either have to suspend the light a couple inches above the tank, or rest it on the top (it really doesn't get that hot), or find a way to stand it on the tank edges.

I have a 2-tube setup like this (cost me under $20) and I got a "Sunshine" bulb and a "Plant & Aquarium" bulb... the first being 5000K and the second being (I suspect) in the 9000K range. They evened each other out to make a very pleasing white light.

How handy is your man Dawn? If he is ok with the old DIY then take a trip to B&Q and buy a twin flouresent tube starter unit and get two normal household tubes. The pack comes with instructions for wiring and and all you have to do is rig it up so it is suspended above the tank, personally id hang it from the ceiling on wires so it leaves the top of the tank free for maintainance, of course this means you will have to just have a cover glass and no hood.
