My neighbor lent me a bowl that I'd like to put Menlow in, but I'm not sure if it'll work. I believe it could hold about 1.5 to 2 gallons of water. The problem is this...it's like a squished fish bowl...what a description.. :S  It's kind of a flat circle shape about 6 inches high, then it tapers up into a small opening about the size of my fist (slighty bigger). I was thinking if I didn't fill it quite to the top, there would be enough surface area. I'd really like to move him in there since there'll be SO much more swimming area for him, but of course, I want him to be able to breathe.

Dix,
Anything will work just as long as he can reach the surface for air. Also your idea of not filling it all the way would help. I have been thinking of writing a small paper about anabantoids and how they breath..would anyone be interested in reading it ?

Great...I'll get it ready for him tonight. I think he knows...he's been staring at it ever since I brought it home...and I'm pretty sure he's stuck his tongue out at Dogma :p

The really nice thing about it is that I think it would be rather hard for him not to jump out.

I for one am always up for reading a "educational" zoology paper... :D (I was a zoology major for part of my college days, and I miss it....sometimes...once in awhile...ok, hardly ever lol).

 Not to scientific....I hate nerds who talk way over my head. I am just a simpleton. More like useful info like what percentage of oxygen do they get from the water and from there air? How big are their stomachs? Things like this.

is it a blurry glass, are you going to look like a big distorted blob to him? Just wondering because that's what I pictured when you described it

Make sure you find something to cover it with, not only do bettas jump but they also need a cover to keep the surface air above the water humid so that they don't get a respiratory infection :)

Well, I don't think it's blurry....I can't imagine some poor fish being objected to huge distorted faces staring at him.

I'm sure he would know it was me though by the kissy :* noises I always make when I'm looking at him. It's awfully cute though...he almost always comes to the surface when I humilate myself in such a manner.
