I am almost ready for my first Cichlid tank and currently have a massive headache. The headache has been induced by the sheer number of species, each with their own scientific name and individual levels of water requirements and aggression levels!! After spending time ensuring my tank has cycled properly and the water is good to go I really want to be sure my fish are happy. I do however have a partner whose entire participation has been to say she wants "pretty fish" so can I get peoples opinions on these. I have a 240 litre over filtered tank. I would be looking to get only three of the below species, whichever three worked better together. Would 4 fish each of three species be ok for this size aquarium, 12 fish in total?

Pseudotropheus saulosi
Labidochromis caeruleus
Otopharynx lithobates
Cynotilapia afra

I have been to the 55 gallon cookie cutter page but wanted to see what people thought of these together? Its soooo confusing for us noobs ( especially the ones who don't just want to throw fish in a tank and be done)

Any advice is much appreciated. As a side note what are some of the prettier female African Cichlids out there and would they be suitable with any of the above?

Many thanks

Rich

I'm no expert when it comes to African cichlids, but from what I could find Cynotilapia afra and Pseudotropheus saulosi though smaller are much more aggressive than Otopharynx lithobates and Labidochromis caeruleus. So much so that they may not tolerate males of their own kind at all. As far as suggesting alternate species I'm afraid I can help there.
Maybe someone with personal experience with these fish will chime in?
Sounds like a beautiful tank though.

I can suggest any aulonocara species. They go well with mbuna. IYour stocking sounds kinda dangerous

Thank you. Regarding dangerous stocking do you mean the species incompatibility or the numbers of fish? I read 12 fish was acceptable in a 240 litre?
