after reading all the betta basics and pinned topics I have decided that i would love a male betta, but i am stuck on tank sizes. On the betta basics it says tank sizes should be nothing less than about 3 gallons (us) so 3 Gallons [US] = 11.3562354 Liters so i am looking for a tank  would prob need to be purchased online as i cant get to my lfs very much so can someone give me some pointers  will something like this be ok?

thanks in advance and please read my sig

Hi, not sure about that tank, doesnt look very big to me. Saying that my boys are not in very big tanks. I see you live in Bristol, is there not a Wilkos near to you? They have a nice one for £4.99. According to the temperature of your house you might not need a heater. You wont need gravel I find you can keep them cleaner without it, dont need a filter either. If you need a heater you can get them for about a tenner from on line.
ps just read your siggie! dont worry be happy!

That tank is rather tall and not very wide so not a great choice in my opinion. Bettas are air breathers and so need to visit the surface frequently so would prefer a longer shallower tank. It doesn't appear to have a lid either which is a must as bettas do jump and a heater if living in the UK is a must I would say. Bettas are a tropical fish from a hot climate so should be kept at around 77-79 degrees and not many peeps keep their heating on all day and night to achieve that.

Good luck in finding a tank and welcome to the wonderful world of bettas :D

thanks everyone :)

liz wilkos in the centre of town and i am on the furthest outskirts so it wouldnt be to good for me to buy one there as its too far to travel

joby i will be getting a heater :good: in my room i keep ther heating off 24/7 so i cant not have a heater. I would also like a sand substrate and some silk plants too :)

A few more questions  which is best glass/plastic? can i have a lighted tank?

I have got glass and plastic tanks, you have to be careful as plastic scratches. Silk plants are nice because the bettas dont hurt their licky tails on them. :good: Dont know how you are going to get a tank though :S
I know.. put a thread on Buy Sell bit on this forum and maybe some one just living round the corner has one for sale. Or put "small tank wanted" in your local shop, or   get one from the tip! :shout:

i am still in the preparation stages in deciding what i want etc, i think i will prob go for a glass tank in the end as i have had plastic tanks split on me before (with goldfish) i am just gathering opinions, the silk plant thing i got from the pinned topics  if i hadnt have known i would have used plasic plants :-( well i am going to be buying one  i will not be getting it for at least 3/4 weeks yet so it gives me chance to have a look around, i can get to my lfs  but it will mean waiting as work and timing for transport means it will be around 4 weeks.

are bettas prone to diseases etc etc? and also are the water levels (nitrate, nirite, ammonia etc) the same for bettas?

Hi,
I 've had mine in a "betta tank" for a while and he seemed happy enough. Recently I moved him into a new 10 gallon tank and he roams all over the tank and seems much happier. The tank with lighted lid (minus light bulbs- go figure) was about $15.00 US. Not only that, but cory catfish can be added to round out the tank a little more and I have never had a betta rumble with my cats. Look over your options pretty good and remember, online stores dont list the glass or plastic small tanks on their website. Petsmart does not list them, but in store, they have glass 10 gallons for 9 bucks.

Good luck.

Hope I'm not hijacking a thread (if I am, I apologize), but would a betta be happy in a five gallon tank that's been split down the center? I'm thinking of buying a betta and have been lurking on this forum for the past few days reading up on them, and I've realized that it's apparently hard to stick with just one betta. As I have a five-gallon tank, would it be all right to just divide it down the center and get two bettas?
