It's been a while since I posted, but I was just wondering if you guys could help me out. Today after a water changed I noticed I have an unwanted guest in my tank. It seems to be a white worm, I'm unsure if it's the only one as small pieces of sedament is circulating the tank in the gentle current, some seem to be white strands, yet I am unable to see them wriggle or fully identify if they are worms or not.

My guess would be that it's a detritus worm, but I wanted a better opinion, as I have heard they dont "swim around" rather they like to hide in the substrate and amongst rocks.

I've attached a link and a video. Would someone be able to tell me what they are and what to do to get rid of them?

Looks like a detritus worm to me. They leave the substrate if there is low oxygenation in it. It could also be a non-parasitic nematode if it swims in a S shape.

I thought so. I've not noticed anything previously, though the low oxygen doesn't sound too good, I'll have to look at getting a tester to check. It is wriggling in an s-like motion though this worm is around 1cm, I've heard nemotodes dont grow above 5mm (but then again, theres always the oddball). I don't actually have fish in this tank yet. I literally cleared it from it's cycling this morning, then I see this little guy in there.

sorry for the double post here, but I'd just like some more insight.

When I posted this thread on monday, I went off and did a 75% water change, uprooted my plants and cleaned them all in dechlorinated water (I gave them a wiggle too just to aggravate the roots to release any ninjas in there), I used my gravel cleaner to get as much critters out of the sand as possible and also pick up any dirt/gunk which may have resided there.

Since then I've been performing a 30-40% water change every day as well as using my gravel cleaner and skimming the surface of the substrate, I cleaned the plants once again and all of this has led me to see an increase in infestation.

They're so small I can't tell if they're dead or alive, but there is 100% alot more then there was initially. I added an airstone just in case it was a problem with oxygen (I mean there are plants in there along with a filter so I was dubious but added the air stone just in case). Thats made no change. I'm completely confused as to why the sudden increase. Theres no muck or crap anywhere as there are no fish to make it.

I'm at a loss as to what I should do next.

EDIT - Just an extra note, my plants are all healthy, any surface plants that seem like they're not doing to well I remove, but otherwise everything is growing well.
