hi everyone, my dad says that when we move he wants to start me on a 90 gal. tank. With a sump, i def not doing the 20 gallon over again (what a headache that was).

so... as you guys might remember im not too savvy in this department (yet) so i want to plan everything out before i spend $$$.

first thing im assuming would be stocking so we can get to filtration and lighting, the 2 clowns in the 20 will stay there so no worries there. i dug this up from the abyss

flame angel
mandarin goby
a pair of bengaii cardianl fish
fire fish
pair of clown goby
pair of jester goby
2 chalk basslet
tail spot blenny
mystery wrasse
2 blue gudgeon dart fish
black cap or yellow head jawfish
long-nose hawkfish

is this ok? im open for anything as long as we dont take out the mandarin or the hawk fish :D

there is a really good salt shop in georgia im gonna scope out and my dad (the source of my fishkeeping woes) saw seahorses and octopi, i said NO, seahorses would get blown around and theres no way im dealing with an octopus unless you say its ok. opinion?

next come CUC, not alot of shrimp because iv heard of coral feeding problems if you have alot so just standard hermits and snails, how many?

lastly come he coral, after seeing some threads around here im leaning towards alot of different kinds of corals instead of just 4. im thinking

frogspawn
disk coral
leather
xenia
zoas
any recomended sps
bubble coral
candy cane
kenya tree
mushrooms of course
are favia and brain corals the same?
and maybe a few others

what lighting? we trust koralia so what type and how many of those might we need?

next,filtration,
were going for a sump with a protein skimmer and algae, along with 90lbs of live rock spread out between the display and sump. phophate removers on a HOB. how big of a sump?

thanks for looking and any advice is welcome,im going to bed, it almost 3am here.

Lucky you, enjoy the planning

always a good idea :good:

first thing im assuming would be stocking so we can get to filtration and lighting, the 2 clowns in the 20 will stay there so no worries there. i dug this up from the abyss

flame angel
may nip at corals
mandarin goby
only when tank is mature
a pair of bengaii cardianl fish
don't think you can sex these very easily
fire fish
Lovely
pair of clown goby
pair of jester goby
You need to check if you can keep two pairs of goby in a tank - i'm not sure
2 chalk basslet
Nice fish
tail spot blenny
cute
mystery wrasse
lovely but too expensive
2 blue gudgeon dart fish
Ah the blacktail dartfish - very nice fish, jumper and burrows
black cap or yellow head jawfish
I dont know much about jawfish
long-nose hawkfish
cool

is this ok? im open for anything as long as we dont take out the mandarin or the hawk fish :D

Too many fish?

there is a really good salt shop in georgia im gonna scope out and my dad (the source of my fishkeeping woes) saw seahorses and octopi, i said NO, seahorses would get blown around and theres no way im dealing with an octopus unless you say its ok. opinion?

Octopus are for the experianced only - after all you dont want it getting out of the tank in the middle of the night and creeping up to your room do you

next come CUC, not alot of shrimp because iv heard of coral feeding problems if you have alot so just standard hermits and snails, how many?

Maybe peppermints or Fire shrimps

lastly come he coral, after seeing some threads around here im leaning towards alot of different kinds of corals instead of just 4. im thinking

frogspawn
disk coral
leather
xenia
zoas
any recomended sps
bubble coral
candy cane
kenya tree
mushrooms of course
are favia and brain corals the same?
and maybe a few others

all sound fine to me with the correct lighting

what lighting?

It will have to be t5 or metal halide I suspect. T5 x 4 tubes for most of those corals except the sps

we trust koralia so what type and how many of those might we need?

start out with really good flow - I would look for approx x30 - really is all according how much you are willing to spend

next,filtration,
were going for a sump with a protein skimmer and algae, along with 90lbs of live rock spread out between the display and sump. phophate removers on a HOB. how big of a sump?

I will leave this to others

thanks for looking and any advice is welcome,im going to bed, it almost 3am here.

Seffie x

ps enjoy the planning

I'll add onto what Seffie said.

Bangaiis: You'll want a male/female pair otherwise the same sex will fight and one kill the other. There have been some advancements in this and one method I discovered from a reputable breeder has personally been correct 8 out of 8 times so far :) I'll dig up some photos later as it is impossible to explain if you're interested :good:

I think that both pairs of gobies would be OK together as they don't really hang out in the same turf. IME clown gobies usually hang out in corals while jesters stay more in the open or go around picking at the LR. Be careful with both species though as they both have poor survival rates and many times do not eat frozen foods.

Obviously, bigger the sump the better, but I would aim for around a 40G.

those photos will be much appreciated nemo :good:

and my dad has noticed that nothing was said about the seahorses, shed a little light on that if possible please

for the stocking i guess ill have to stock slowly and in a certain order, im thinking
start with the fire fish
jaw fish
basslets
hawkfish
cardinals
blenny
dart fishes
angel
jester goby
clown goby
wrasse
and after a year or so the mandarin

how many peppermints and fre shrimps should i get along with the hermits and snails?

thanks, there was going to be no way i was gonna take care of an octopus, ill be sure to take a pic of one when i scope out the place ;)

for the lighting and when seffie means t5 x 4 is that four t5s? so should i get 2 reg lights and 2 actinic blues?
or am i being dumb?

for an sps coral, would a stylophora be ok to start with? its going to be just the one sps
also would additional hammer and cup coral be ok?

i think thatll be it for stocking, ill draw up a diagram for my sump in a few, (be prepared, its probably gonna be awful)

heres the sump, again i dont know crap about how to set one up, heres my first try.

I would add the gobies before anything else.

Seahorses should be in a species only tank. If not than only very very docile and non aggressive gobies can be added with them. Non aggressive always meaning non aggressive with food. Seahorses are very slow and honestly, very stupid (although I love them for it). As work we have to temporarily put them into a fish carrier inorder to feed them or otherwise turn off all the pumps and filters until they're finished. Also, you could have nothing that could even potentially harm them. Nothing with stinging tentacles etc.

heres the sump, again i dont know crap about how to set one up, heres my first try.

Some suggestions. Where your "walls" are. Those are called "baffles". After certain chambers in the sump, you should have 3 baffles, 1 inch apart, which will help to break up bubbles. This is eespecially useful after the skimmer section. Instead of having the sand, LR and macro in different chambers, I would put them all in the same chamber and use that section as a refugium. I would also put your skimmer before your refugium so that your skimmer isn't sucking up things from the refugium.

As an example, here is my design for my sump:

Also, this site: http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html
Explains sumps very well and has several different designs.

thanks for the info, ill look at it tonight (and maybe pm me those pictures on the bangaiis if your not too busy ;) )

so heres the revised stocking order
start with the CUC
jester gobies
clown gobies
fire fish
jaw fish
basslets
hawkfish
cardinals
blenny
dart fishes
angel
wrasse
and after a year or so the mandarin

thanks for the seahorse info, he doesnt want one for this setup which is good, yet i sigh cuz i know whats gonna happen next...

heres whats left unawsnered:

how many peppermints and fire shrimps should i get along with the hermits and snails?

for the lighting and when seffie means t5 x 4 is that four t5s? so should i get 2 reg. lights and 2 actinic blues?

Yes, seffie meant 2 actinic and 2 daylights.

SPS are not my forte, but I looked up stylophora and MOST of the stylophora species seem to be relatively easy to care for and lighting is not as critical as other SPS. Without metal halides, however, you would DEFINITELY have to put this coral as high as possible. Hammer and Pagoda corals should do well under that lighting, I would probably put them in the mid-level tank range.

I'll Post the pictures tomorrow :good:

again, cannot thank you enough for all the help you have given me :good:

this (i think) leaves 1 more thing to plan and thats the CUC.
so if anyone can just fill out the bottom for me that would be great :)

# of hermits =
# of snails =
# of shrimps and what kind =

and ill fix my sump design and post tommorrow

As Nemo said 2 x Actinics and 2 x Marine white or you could go with 3 x marine white and 1 x actinic

Shrimps = as many peppermints as you like, probably about four would be good

and a pair of bloods/fire

4/5 hermits, depending on type
20 Nas and ceriths
10 tubro or astrea

dont get them all at once though - you need to build up enough food for them and dont get the shrimps for a couple of months after cycling has finished

thanks seffie your the best!

so now its just my sump design and im pretty sure thats it. here.

ill probably build it myself if glass is cheap

3 things with the sump I would suggest:

1. I would put a separate chamber for the input from the DT before the refugium otherwise you'll probably have a chronic case of sand EVERYWHERE because of the water smashing into the sand.

2. I would put the refugium after the protein skimmer so things from the refugium don't end up in a small plastic cup instead of in your DT :(

3. Be sure you correctly determining how high the baffles and water level will be otherwise you might overflow something!!! To do so, partially depends upon where the water is leaving from your DT. Are you drilling your DT or using an overflow?

this is off topic but i see you are an assassins creed fan? also you have and xbox 360 im afraid i have a good old ps3  i did have an xbox but then it died :grr: stupid thing had to die in the summer hoilydays

thanks, over in GA we found an AWSEOME lfs with 200 gallon tanks w/ sumps and everything needed (preordered!!!!) so yippee! but that sucks because this thread is now pointless, i need to chane the name to 200 gal.
