wooden tanks

Hi

I have read somewhere that large tanks are made from plywood with a piece of glass on the front as a window.

The plywood is then treated in a chemical to waterproof it

Ill see if i can dig out the article

Its marine plywood (30 usd for a 4x8x3/4) and it is often painted with oilbased paint after an oil based outdoor primer.

I have seen pictures of them, not attractive IMO. It also leaves the box looking darker inside and you can't see the fish as well.

Bit like a coffin with a view pannel!

Yes, there are those who use marine grade plywood for non viewing walls. They don't have to look bad, depends on your tatse really. I routinely paint the back and sometimes the sides of my tanks black, in that case, what the wall is made of is totally imaterial!

It is more expensive then regular plywood, yes, but cheaper then a piece of glass that will do the same job. You don't say where you are so it is difficult to comment further.

I think Fozzy is building parts of his giant setup with plywood.

I have see many plywood tank, But its much bigger that normal glass tank.

I have not seen one smaller that 200Gal. most is about 480Gal in size and that inside of the tank is painted with e-poxy or fiberglass

localy here is SA I can build a 480Gal tank for the same price as I would buy a 90Gal tank..

bigger tanks cost more to keep clean...
