Hi all,

Just bought a new 5.5 foot tank. I now have the wonderful joy in swapping everything over and filling up the new tank / moving the old one (oh boy) but it will be worth it when all done!

Anyway just a few questions.

1) Is it worth using some of my old sand in my tank (considering I have crabs / snails in it at the moment) or should I just use new sand only?

2) Im guessing it will be much better to use not only new RO water but also add the water I currently have in my tank which is cycled?

Anymore info / help would be appreciated. Im going to need loads more live rock

yup use everythink, from the old tank
make sure the new tank ro water is salted to the same as the old,and the same temp
there no real cycling again , think of it as a large waterchange

Currently in your position :) I am no expert but I think using your old (already live sand) can only be good for your new tank and will prob help it cycle faster as with the water :)

And congrats on your new tank. You get to have as much fun as me with the production of RO water.

I have been filling up them old style black bins all day (80 litres each) well I say I have I am at work I have my GF at my house doing it :)

i did mine getting a longer r.o tubing ,and striaght into the tank,
then i had spare pumps and heaters on (did a good job)
finaly the salt

then wait some more for it to settle and test
,
then the fun bit
move all of the 100gal and sump friends over .....tip where gloves can be stung by all manor of things living in the rock lol
brisleworm s are nice either

I am thinking that I will just be dumping the water into that tank then mixing the salt in thier. Quick question if I haven't got enough sand to cover the bottom, how hard is it to add sand after the water is in?

Hey all.

Ok the tank is nearly full now... I have a large amount of new water in and also my old water from my previous tank, I have around 4/5 litres left to fill so will try to use the old water as that will help.

Ok slight dilemna, I have added new sand and some old sand from my tank. When looking at the tank after adding the old sand I saw loads of little what looked like baby star fish, very small with a little grey circle and around 4/5 small tenticles like a octopus... Any ideas? Is this a prob?

Also I only have around 1 1/2cm of sand around the tank... Should I add more or is this ok? considering I have a sand sifting star fish.

Last but not least guys, im at the stage where im waiting for the water to clear as its all foggy at the min but when should I add my live rock from my old tank/ new live rock from the shop? and also when should i add a pump / turn it on?

Cheers :good:

the starfish dunno would need a pic if pos

adding sand to a tank of water can be done if put in a container and lowered down ,but it will still get cloudy

Sounds like baby brittle stars - good members of your Clean Up Crew :good:

Yeah they're an OK hitchiker, I think Matthew5564 has them too. Get your powerheads turned on asap :)
