im just wondering if amipods molt? as i have noticed a see thru replica of it while it was on the rock.

also im getting bubble algae, when should i think about getting emerald crab?

Not sure on the amphipods myself but you don't want bubble algae spreading across the tank. You may have excess nutrients in the tank. Have you tested for nitrate and phos?

have got no test kits yet.
there was a tiny bit when i got it, could it spread just by having a little?

how should i tackel this bubble algae?

Any Arthropod will molt, which includes amphipods, so yes they molt.

As for the bubble algae, emerald crabs eat it like candy :)

You desperately need test kits. Make them top if your list as the results can tell you an awful lot about how the tank is running.
I'm pretty sure the same applies to bubble algae as it does with green hairy algae which means a good scrub and removal of nutrients in the tank. Get some rowaphos or phosban phosphate remover and dome seachems de-nitrate or add some cheato morpha for a more natural way.
By adding these you will be removing phosphate and nitrate from your tank which deplete the algaes food source and should kill it off.

Best bet is to google bubble algae in a marine aquarium and that should come up with some results hopefully leading to further advice.

Like nemo said regarding the emerald crab, would think Christmas has come early if you've got plenty of algae in your tank.
I have one in mine and he does a cracking job of keeping things clean.

okay thanks for that.

would it be safe to add one as i only have 2.8kg live rock

Rowaphos and di-nitrate is just simple filter media so place them in a media bag and either put them in a weir/sump/internal or external filter/skimmer/reactor etc. Or just contain it well in a media bag and hang it in front of a powerhead or anywhere with high flow for the time being.

As for cheato. It needs light so as long as it's got that and in a place with high flow also then that should be ok.
ps- Cheato, apparently grows like wildfire so either contain it in a media bag or keep it trimmed. Dont expose it to the display side of your tank without some sort of barrier to stop it growing and spreading and to also keep any cuc or hitchikers from making it a tasty snack.

If your params are good ie zero amm, trite, phos and you have good ph then you should be good to add an emerald crab.

If you test for phos then take the result with a pinch of salt! [what a rhyme! lol]
As any algae would absorb the phos and keep it locked in so any phos result could be inaccurate.

If you have a large amount of algae on your LR then remove the rock if poss and scrub it in used tank water. Thats what I did and along with phos remover and a good cuc the algae should be gone in no time.
What kits have you gone for?.........Please say Salifert or API! lol

Firstly find out your test results. I personally wouldnt go for an API kit as they are not widely used in marine and are thought to be one of the more inaccurate sets. Look for brands like Salifert (commonly used), Tropic Marin, FM, and DD have just brought out some new ones. Then if you have a high nitrate (No3) level we can establish what would be the best method for you to use,

Hope that helps.

well atm i am looking at API kits

i was gonna be using API as i have heard good things about it. i also use API fr my freshwater tank. also it is more affordable.

Fair enough, I can understand that as the hobby is already expensive enough. I imagine they would be fine for Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate. I was just under the view that there are better tests out there.

Cheers

okay i heard best 2 are selifert or API

yeah this hobby is already expensive, thats is why im looking for bargins

I cant say I blame you. I persoanlly like Salifert but I will be looking at the new DD range when mine runs out. Have a look on ebay if you want salifert. If you arent going to be looking at corals right away you'll only need ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, Phosphate and PH tests. Unless I have completely forgotten one

ill just get API for the initial set up, once it is up and running (and more money ) i might look into salifert.
