Animals often find their place in history, frequently overlooked and often forgotten

But one Syrian Brown Bear called Wojtek made his mark during WW2, his legacy lives on and he is very fondly remembered by those who served alongside him, their families.....and visitors of Edinburgh Zoo where he lived out his days being rightfully pampered

Many have questioned whether the story of Wojtek is infact true or whether it was made up by hyperactive imagination.

Wojtek did indeed exist, his exploits saved many lives fighting alongside the Polish Army.

He was an incredible Bear, much loved and respected even now some 59 years after his death

Every army had its bears or other animal mascots. They were wonderful propaganda. The original Winnie the Pooh was a regimental mascot sold to the British by a Canadian soldier who'd grabbed a cub.
