I have 3 clumps of lucky bamboo, that are just hanging around ( between 3 different tanks ) the 1st is in an older acrylic tank, that had a spot for the clip on “test tube” type heaters, cut out in the plastic welded on top… I wanted to plug the hole, as that tank has my Bichir in it, and they are notorious escape artists… so, I clumped 3-4 18 inch stalks together, with a silicone band ( rubber band size ) on the bottom of the stalks, and inserted them into the hole from the top, and let them just hang, suspended by the tops… the roots were 3-4 inches off the substrate… the roots grew down to the substrate, and into it… ( typically if the roots are buried, I haven’t had them grow for me ) also the tops, have really actually grown ( like the jungle grass they are ) right now 18-24 inches of top growth…
I did the same in my Hillstream tank, as that has a bamboo forest background, and a couple stalks hanging in front of the background, give an interesting 3D effect… I just had to move those, as I moved my group of adult Tin Foil barbs out of that tank… the roots also started out suspended 3 inches or so off the substrate… been there 6 months or so, but the roots had grown into the substrate, 10 to 12 inches… I’ve not seen the rapid top growth yet, but suspect they will, maybe pushed back until the roots reestablish, after pulling them up???
