Full Microsoft Announcement here.

Windows 7 really is shaping up to be the best Microsoft OS yet. The RC is likely to be 99% the same as the RTM so get yourself a free copy for a year next week. :good:

If anyones been reading the Windows news recently then the Windows 7 'Big Secret' broke yesterday. XPM, XP Mode.

The news that Windows 7 -- release candidate on track for April 30, thank you very much -- will have available a virtualized version of XP that will run right right alongside 7 apps is exciting stuff for those of us who have shaken our heads at Microsoft's backward-compatibility problems over the years. It means very nearly 100% compatibility with current Windows apps

RC = Release Candidate

Basicly means that unless there are any huge problems, this is exactly the same version they will be selling in a few months time. Because they want people to test it you can download it for free but it will expire after a year.

The term release candidate (RC) refers to a version with potential to be a final product, ready to release unless fatal bugs emerge. In this stage of product stabilization (read QA cycle), all product features have been designed, coded and tested through one or more Beta cycles with no known showstopper-class bug

RTM = Release To Manufacturing. The final verison.

As for why its good, do some research, its been Universaly praised. Remember XP is 12 years old including development. Mainstream support ended last week so anything 'new' your hear about for XP is just spit and sellotape.

Just Google Windows 7 after April 30th and you can go and download it.

The RC license will expire, worst case you can go back to what you use now but by then it will probably be time for a new computer if you are still using XP.

Iam on a laptop, is there any difference, a new computer in a year

Also my computer was a present from saudi arabi....it was all loaded up before they gave it to me, is that a problem?

If your an MSDN or Technet subscriber, 30th of April will be when you get it. But the normal public have to wait till 5th May.

I tried the 7000 build and really like it on my laptop,

I've tried installing later builds on my desktop, and also the supposed RC build 7100 leaked version, and it's killing my system, BSOD hell, can't get a suitable driver for my graphics card!!!

Doh, I have Technet Plus. I should have said 5th May on the OP

Dont think you should judge the RC based on an illegaly leaked and illegally downloaded copy. Wait for the real deal. What graphics card do you have?

P.S. Saw a Secunia/ISC figure that 60% of leaked/hacked/cracked software contains keyloggers/trojans. Take care if your going to use them.

As you've got technet plus, does that mean you get it 30th April, if so, fancy sharing it lol!!!

I'm not judging it, will wait for the proper RC, I got build 7100 from a private link, no torrents involved!!! The machine I tried it on was pretty old, Radeon x1050, E6300, 2gb Ram. Definitely a graphics card issue as I took it out last night and the system worked, but put it back in and BSOD, used all sorts of drivers and still the same problem. I'm hoping by the time the "Official RC" is released, my problems will be sorted!!!

AMD have been producing Windows 7 drivers for newer cards ahead of the game for a while now.

Can't see anything for the x1050 under Windows 7 but the newest Vista driver should definitely work for you unless the card is dodgy. Let me knoe how you get on on the 5th :D

AMD have'nt by the looks of it produced any drivers for windows 7 yet, if they will or not, I don't know. The microsoft ones cause havock lol.

I'll let you know how I get on the 5th then, 6 days after you've had yours lol!!!

Click on the link in my post above. :good:

Tried them all, a whole host of drivers but no go, just does not like the card. I'm hoping it's one of those glitches that get ironed out as I really like 7, or maybe it's telling me to upgrade my desktop, as it's been neglected due to laptop lol.

Just like to point out xp VM is only available on the professional and ultimate editions of Win7 and its only exciting for you archaic people using specialist programs that haven't been updated to vista compatible

I wouldn't as you don't seem competent enough to deal with any issues, no offence meant. In basic installing an OS reformats the harddrive deleting all your data on that drive, windows vista installer did include an option to transfer your files to the new OS area but as a Release Candidate this may not be included and as always when dealing with radical changes you should backup all of your data beforehand. If your happy as is why change, you don't to me sound like a power user and only use your pc for general usage (Browsing, videos occasionally and office work) the performance benefits are negated as a laptop the hardware won't be that fast to start with and with your usage it will be hardly noticeable imo.

What is your motherboard chipset? Provisonal thought is that there is graphics and motherboard conflict as some of the old chipsets are not fully supported by windows 6

Or Enterprise Admins with over 15,000 machines

I was just pointing out that XPM was the 'big secret.' Plus the RC will allow you to install Ultimate.
