A couple of times, I have seen deformed dorsal fins on Cory group fish, including on sterbai once. The entire tank had tiny dorsals in the same odd shape, so that said bad breeder work. A friend had some and the dorsals didn't grow normally, but stayed small.
It could be injury, but unless you bought them sight unseen, that would be something to avoid in making future choices. They would still be great fish, but the dorsals on the genetic problem ones seem to stay odd. They always reminded of guys wearing hats that were too small for their heads.
Hopefully, something bit them and didn't destroy the rays. If not, it doesn't seem to weaken or harm the fish.
