Will Different Cory Species Mix Properly?

Hey all,

I have been setting up two new tanks. One of them has two corys. While I don't plan on increasing the fish load till it cycles, I've read up on Corys and realize I should get another four.

Do I need to get the same species of Cory so they aren't lonely? Or will just about any Cory do for company?

You will likely need to stick to the same species in order for grouping to occur although ive noticed that bronze and peppers can group together. If tank space is an issue a group of 3 of each species can work, although you wont see the cories in their most behaviour, however they will definitely be better off than a single fish.

Hope this helps.

Some cories mix better together than others. But they are happiest with same species at 5 or more. They are more likely to be happy enough to spawn when there are about 5. Personally I like to have more than five. Small cories will group and hang better with other small cories of simular coloring. Rough and tumble cories are tough on more cautious cories. If at all possible give them more of the same kind. They will be happier and will reward you with their behavior.

I have 2 bronze, 2 peppered and a leopard cory together, it's great watching them scuttle round the tank together :)

I agree. I have at least 5, most 6 or more, of each species. There are not any problems mixing different groups. It is a good idea to make sure they all have the same requirements (temperature, PH, stuff like that).

You can see in this thread, I have 4 different species in this tank:

They do this all the time. They definately form their own groups by species as well. Which species of cory do you have?

EDIT: My bronze aeneus spawn for me and they are in a group of 5, plus the 6 albino's. Im going increase these numbers on down the road by keeping some of the fry.

Hi eschaton :)

All corys seem to get along well together as long as they are comfortable with the same temperature range, however they will do best if you have three or more of each species in your tank. The more, the better.

What species of cory do you already have?

I have two Albinos. I've since stopped going to the LFS where I got them and found a much better LFS which has a much wider selection.
