Will Different Colored Gouramis Mate?

I have three opaline gouramis in a mix with neons, black skirts, and a few other docile fish in a 46 gallon. However two of the gouramis are the best of friends, and the third one is always getting chased away/almost attacked.

So, should I get more gouramis to make the lonely one happy? If I do get more should I only get ONE more opaline?

OR, can I get a different colored gourami to befriend the lonely one.

OR, can I even mix different colored gouramis?

other gouramis quit happily mix together, i dont know about breeding tho, before anyone can give you any suggestions what size is your tank?

i think he meant 'quite' not quit.. , And as far as i know gourami don't breed with other species gourami

You're best to stick to the same species.

But in your case in terms of different colours you're lucky - opaline gouramis are just one of several colour morphs of the three spot gourami - other are blue, and gold. So technically you could have any of these colour variants. Check out the fish index for more information.

But I wouldn't put a different species in, (e.g. a pearl or something) because that might cause problems.

What is the sex of the 3 opalines you have now? And what sex is the 'lonely' one? In your 46 gallons, you could add another 1 or 2 opalines. Stick with the same species. And depending upon the sex of the current ones, you should decide which sex your additions should be. The colour doesn't matter as long as they are opalines.

WOW, I've had these gouramis for about 3 months, never had any before. I dont know what sex they are, are there tricks for identifying males and females?

That is so cool to learn that there are three type of Opaline, mine are a blue/silver color. So could I get a gold tone one to partner up with my other one...?

The best way to differentiate between the male and female Opaline Gourami is by the dorsal and anal fins. In the male, the dorsal and anal fins are longer and pointed, while the female's are shorter and rounded.

I could have sworn the opaline was it's own species. The gourami with color variants I thought was the Blue Gourami, and the Gold or Sunset gourami.

Don't forget that there is one more to the 3 spot gourami.

Gold, blue, opaline, and platinum as well. I heard that you can get a platinum from breeding a gold and opaline somewhere in this site a long time ago.
