Ok, a girl bought a goldfish together with a pleco (wrong I know) then another lady said 1. the pleco should go back which is rite, n 2. the pleco will suck the slime off the oranda goldfish... is that true?
It can happen. Plecostomus are pretty aggressive fish when they get older and if they aren't fed enough, they'll look for other sources of food on their own.
I don't know how common it is percentage-wise, but it does happen.
when i first started my tank i had a pleco in w/ everyone else and he went agro sucking on frogs and my bichir...but he wouldnt touch those damn algae waffers i would drop in for him....so i gave him to a friend and ended up getting him back 2day... go figure....
A friend of mine has a fish shop, and he had a sucking loach in the same tank as some kissing gourami's, temporarily, and every day for about 3 days he found one dead in the mornings, then on the third day he found out why. The loach was attaching itself to the gouramis, and killing them
I had Plecos and goldfish together and the only aggression ever in the tank was when the big Pleco got the cave before the little one. Then, all he would do was chase him out.
My opinion is that as long as you have sufficient aquarium decorations for the pleco to high and suck on, they will be content with that and not need to suck on the goldfish.
I have had my plecos with my goldfish for several years new and old fish and haven't experienced the problem.
I agree with denes. However all fish are differnet. Some fish that are known to be aggressive arent always aggressive in a tank. its just the luck of the draw.
I've never known of a plec that sucks the slime from other fish - I thought they were algae eaters, not slime. Plecs tend to get very lazy as they age - as long as food is plentiful for them (algae wafers, fresh veggies every now and then and enough ornaments for them to suck on and hide in) there shouldn't be any problems. There is a sucking loach that is known to suck on other fish - are you sure you don't mean that?
