Why when I get new stock for the tank I always tend to lose one especially if they are in a group.
Like lost a neon, lost a platy now lost a cory.

Is it something to do with being in the bags on the way home, or do they always give you one week one in the tank?

It could be just that you are unlucky. I don't think that LFS look for one bad one to give to you it may happen but it would be hard really unlucky for them to do it too you everytime!

Have you checked your water stats and such like?

Maybe somebody else can give you another justifiable reason.

Hi tetraqueen,

I'm sorry about your lost cory, but I think you've just had a run of bad luck. Do you shop at a reputable lfs? Buying live fish is not the place for trying to save a few cents, so buy the best even if it costs a little more or if you have to travel out of your way to get them.

When I buy fish, I always ask them to put them into a plastic specimen container before bagging them up. That way I can double check to see if they're the ones I want, and that they haven't been injured by the net when they were caught.

What kink of corys did you get?

I think you've just had a bum streak to be honest. Another part of the problem could be in adding several fish all at once causes a water levels spike, and it might cause to much stress for the weakest fish of the group. Reall it just comes down to poor luck.

God Bless,
Joshua

Many thanks for your kind replies.

It could be bad luck as you say.

I do go to a good lfs and all the other fish I have had have been perfect. ie If they survive the first week they seem to get along fine.

I did have a disaster but that was due to a tank move.

I like the idea of a plastic pot but unfortunately when I get the fish they all look fine so think it maybe the water stats although they are fine it could spike with stress etc.

The one albino who died was quieter and didn't move around as much apart from that I noticed little difference. The bronze pair are little and large but as so cute they are unbelievable, the peppered two are sweet also but not as sociable as they are the scavengers of the pack. The albino who is left is like really in with betta it's as if they have a game. Betta is up in the thicket ( floating plants) I like that for them and the albino is underneath in and out of a rock cave (artificial mould). He eats and comes to see me when betta does and when their paths cross betta never shows any signs of flaring. They both have this welcoming similiar to the Oscars. I cannot go near the tanks but I have all these fish coming up to greet me.

Must admit the Neons were my favourite but even though they are in the bedroom upstairs its as if they are waiting like a shoal of paranhas to be food for the Oscars. The Oscars so far are tiny and apart from greeting and now eating, the problem there was it was too cold. (thermostat had gone on heater) but I think the cory's , platy and the Betta are the most fun to watch and the colours are far superior that the Oscars.

Anyway chat over. Time to go back to bed.

Are you aclimatising more than just temp before putting them in the tank? I haven't had any problems since I started using the method where you slowly replace the water in the bag with the tank water this helps them to get used to a different PH and hardness and nitrate level etc it also means that very little of the LFS water gets into your tank, imp. if you don't quaranteen. It takes 15 mins or so and you just replace a small amount of water (tank water into the bag and bag water out of the bag into a seperate jug) every few minutes.
