Hello.

I think this is going to be an easily answere question, but here goes:

Why am I working so hard to keep bubbles out of my sump and my tank? I know that I SHOULDN'T have any bubbles, but I have no idea why.

Thanks

Steve

There's several reasons.....one of the main reasons is because of your corals. Sometimes bubbles can become trapped around/underneath the coral and cause real harm.
Too many bubbles can cause salt creep which can be a pain to clean.
Then there's the looks of it. Too many bubbles will cut down on how well you can see into your tank etc.
Some people claim that too many bubbles can cause gas bubble disease in fish (although I rather doubt this - ever see the bubbles that break over a reef in the ocean? TONS and the fish are all swimming in this).
HTH :)

Hehe, yes thats all true but he asked why :fun:

Do you run a skimmer and if so where in your system is it? And how does water enter your sump? Also, does your sump have any bubble traps? Also, can you take some pics of your setup? :)

the question of Why has been asnwered, you sound like you are startying to answer How, rather than why...

I am kinda curous on how bad bubbles can be.....I dont have an air pump or anything but my skimmer throws ALOT of microbubbles into my tank, is this bad?.....I have so much air in my water my powerhead will somtimes blow out plumes of bubbles, no idea where it get them so it must be pullin them outta the water right..

As mentioned earlier, micro-bubbles can harm filter feeders (especially sponges) and other corals as a collection of them on the underside of a coral for example is no different than exposing the coral to the air for a lengthy period of time.

Your powerhead will only blow out bubbles if air has been sucked into the intake, this is usually caused when a small whirlpool is created allowing air to be sucked down to a powerhead located too close to the surface. There can be other ways such as trapped air being relased from under rocks, etc. that floats up past the powerhead and gets sucked in but this is not as common.
