Ok, I had 3 healthy baby sailfin mollies swimming in my 4.4 gallon or 20 litre tank by themselves, quite happily. Then one of them died. So I had 2. A male and a female. when the baby died i did a water test, and everthing was fine just how it was meant to be.

Could have been kind of stupid but about a week and a half ago I bought 3 male guppies and shoved those in there with them. Yesterday I found my female baby dead. She looked as though she had her mouth open, and she had this white fluffy stuff floating around her as well. I do a water test every 2 weeks or so, and I will post the results of my next water test next time I come on here, I haven't had time to do one yet. Anyone suggest anyhting?

well the white fluffly mouth stuff is mouth fungus
they get it from being shipped to the stores in dirty baggies when they are young and weak, then shoved into dirty overcrowded tanks at the stores

your problem probably has to do with the fact that your tank is overcrowded
your obviously doing a good job with the water changes for your water to be good
but that isn't my concern
first of all i would not stick mollies in anything less than a 10 gallon, although i think they would prefer a 20 gallon, as they are known for their mood swings
it is true that they are labeled community but they have semi-aggressive potential
especially in such a small tank
they get adgitated when they don't have their own space
and just because you didn't catch them doesn't mean they weren't bullying each other
the stress from a bully can kill any fish
and does the tank have a heater?
because both a heater and a filter are required for those fish

Ah - this thread may help answer my question then...

...I had 4 balloon mollies, and they seemed really happy and lively, then one by one, over a period of about 6 weeks, I lost three of the four. It seems they they develop swimbladder problems (i.e. end up on the bottom of the tank, struggling to get themselves the right way up etc etc), and after about a day they die.

As my other fish are (or at least appear to be) perfectly OK, I was going to ask if anyone had any ideas, but reading that they prefer larger tanks, that may answer my question.

Are the two related??

Yes I have got a filter and heater. I wans't aware before that my tank was too small for my mollies, my fishie books didn't say anything and neither did the pet store. I have asked for money for my birthday, speciafically to buy big a new tank. Will they be ok in my old tank for a month or 2? I haven't got anywhere to put them. I bred my mollies, so unless the guppies could have given her mouth fungus?
