I've always noticed that my betta tanks smell like garlic. The smell gets especially strong during water changes. I mentioned it to my friend and she said that her tanks smell like garlic, too. Does anyone else have this problem? What is it? Is there any way to make it go away? :dunno:

Mine all do too.
It seems like it's way moreso with live plants in it too.
I don't know why though, and would like to also.

Neither my friend or myself has live plants... We only put Start Right and stress coat in the tanks. I put those in my livebearer tanks, too, and they don't smell like garlic. Weird...I wish I knew what it was.

*Leans over and sniffs a couple of tanks*
Mine don't smell like anything.... except possibly a very faint fishy smell, since it's water change day and everyone needs a good cleaning

Your betta fart. Your betta must have been sneaking out and eat italian crusine when you are sleeping. LOL J/K

I cant remember the whole post let alone where it was but I read that a tank should smell like compost, other smells could be down to water parameters but I'm not positive on that

Hope that helps

Dan

Eeeeeeee, the mystery of the garlic fish! I think it could easily be our rocks or food, B  Maybe it will remain an unsolved mystery? It just seems odd that both of my bettas have it and now so do all of yours. Other than the stink they all seem healthy and happy though~

mine kindd of smell like that sometimes too, i use stress coat, and i feed hbh bites

I used some Ammo lock once when i was desperate - man, it could've killed every vampire in Transylvania!!!! I dunno what they put in that stuff, but I sure will be very VERY desperate before I ever use it again. Whole house smelled like rotten garlic for weeks - it was disgusting

And I love garlic!!!

You used anything like that recently?

Thanks everybody. Maybe it is the food. BettaMomma, what do you feed your guys?
Hikari Bio Gold pellets, blood worms, peas, daphnia, brine shrimp... whatever they want, basically. lol

Well, one bowl (the smaller of the 2) smells that way if I don't do a 100% every 3 days, and the larger one doesn't, so long as I do a full change every week. It may be that the leftover food gets nasty quicker in the small bowls. What size bowls are yours in?
