I have a large tank that my brother gave me when he moved out... i mean large!! it had two tiny neons in it and that was it, until they died a few months ago. I cleaned the tank and brought all new rocks, plants ect and cyclied it. Everything is fine and stats are perfect... how excited was i to stock it......

Anyway before i had chance to get any fish myself, as a present my uncle brought me this werid, mean looking thing. He said it was a 'devil catfish' or something like that... and Devil it is!!!

its quite big and has large sucky mouth and its a black colour (sorry, can you tell im new to all this?!!) the thing is, i dont really want him as he is quite large and ugly but my uncle said he is rare and cost him quite abit of money so i cant just get rid of him...

anyway, i wasnted to add some of my own fish so i went and brough some colourful guppies and molleys the other day, added them, went to sleep.. woke up in the next morning and they had gone.. completely!!! no bones, carcassed etc... NOTHING!

Is this catfish thing a killing machine?? he doesnt really look evil or like he could eat them fish (Although he is a big thing!) My mum has gone out today to buy me some more fish to go in this tank as i only have the catfish in there and its abit dull... shes getting me some colourful fish!! cant wait.. just hope my catfish dont eat them!!

Sorry, but the catfish probably eats other fish because he is supposed to eat other fish. Have you looked up "devil catfish" to see if that's what he is and what his requirements are? If he truly can't be kept with other fish, then you may want to invest in a separate tank for him.

ok, my stupid mum just got home and dumped three guppies into the tank with him.... and the bliming catfish eat them whole...

i have 'saved' the other guppies that she put in there and there back in there bag (im taking them back to fish shop) this fish is scary.....

Please don't add any more fish until we've worked out what you have - google spiny catfish or L185 and see if that is anything like your fish or look here - http://www.scotcat.com/photo_gallery_page.html -and see if anything is similar in shape.
How big is your tank & how big is this fish. How often do you do water changes?

If you're anywhere near me (in Leeds, UK) I'll come and take him off your hands. :good:

No such thing as an evil fish mate, just poor choices and a lack of information and research.

If you're going to keep him then find out what he is and keep suitable tank mates. If you want to keep something else give him to a local fish store for credit. Or get a second tank.

Oh and slap your brother for me.

i am from asia and i think i have seen this type of catfish on my local fishmonger.
they sell it for 2 for £1 so i can not believe that the guy is selling it for £150.

im not near leeds sorry..... ive just spoken to my uncle and explained whats happened and he said that he was told by the local fish shp that it was a rare fish and the price represcented that!! my uncle said he will get rid of it for me if i dont want it..... is it really a rare fish then? what am i suppose to fed it?

Will it attack my hand if i put it in the tank? sorry if this sounds silly because i want to know what kind of fish i share my bedroom with at night!!!

Please do not flush this fish. :( There are too many catfish lovers here, me especially, who would gladly have a fish like that. If you need to get rid of him, please submit an ad on the forum first with your location.

If he's a black devil cat, please read this profile. http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=34215 And you can either keep him in the tank by himself and be happy that you have such a unique fish, get another tank for him to use the current one for a community, trade him to the LFS, or advertise him for sale here.

dont worry wendy i wont get rid of him in a horrible way... im actually thinking of keeping him (alone of course!) its such a shame that my uncle never asked the right questions when he brought him and/or the lack of knowledge of the Lfs ment that guppies have lost there lifes because myself and my mother wasn't aware of this fishes diet!!

he looks just like that picture that you submitted in that link wendy... ugly thing isn't he!!

yeah well this one isn't short of character!!! the more i look at him, the more i begain to like him...! its just a shame to have such a large tank and only one fish in there....

are there any fish that can go with him? what about fish bigger than him? surely he cant eat something bigge than him?? i might get a larger fish and see what happens.. what do you think?
