Hi,

I was wondering why some plecs have more than one L number, e.g. the Clown or Ringlet Plec, Panaque Maccus has L104, L162 and LDA22?

Andy :)

AFAIK this is because they look different at different stages of growth
once the fish is studied further they realise it is the same as a previously
described plec and add that L number to its listing.
some people will know it as the original L number and some as the new but
linking the numbers together means everyone knows they are talking about the same fish.

An LDA number is usually assigned to a plec that has yet to be studied and that may well
turn out to be one that already has an L number.

Not sure about this. My understanding was that L-numbers and LDA-numbers were simply created by two different magazines, 'Die Aquarien und Terrarienzeitschrift' and 'Das Aquarium' respectively. There's nothing to stop one fish from having both an L-number and an LDA-number, and in fact many do.

Cheers, Neale
