I am curious to why Dragon Wrasse move rocks

Mine has made a rockpile which it sleeps under

It then spends at least 2 hours a day rearranging it

The pile looks totally different day by day

Any ideas on why they do this?

They aren't also known as the Rock Moving wrasse for nothing

I would stick down anything you don't want the little horror to rearrange for you.

yup I knew all about them before I bought it

What I was interested in was why they do it - Having asked on anther forum I beleive they move the rocks to find animals hiding undrr the rocks

Or they get bored stuck in an aquarium and just fancy somat to do that gives them a good work out at the same time! ;)

yeh i beleive its part of there hunting move a rock find some food. very smart hunters i believe.

As alluded to above one reason is to find food. If any razorfish are in a pair, they will work as a team; one will lift rocks and the other will slay anything under it, and they alternate after a while.

Another reason is to build territory markers and to build houses; after building a pile of anywhere from three to dozens of rocks, they will dig under it and apparently this deters larger predators that hunt by echolocation (dolphins), electroreception (hammerhead sharks, electric rays) and various other methods that would otherwise be able to sense, dig up, and consume the relatively small razorfish.
