I have a 20 gallon tank (taller, not longer) with 5 glofish (skirt) tetras. To be blunt... they are jerks. Very nippy, always chasing each other, and just generally not living up to the 'peaceful' label that most websites describe them as.
If I had a longer tank I would get 2 or 3 more to see if that would break up the aggression a bit. With the taller tank, I am not sure if I would be making the problem worse with less 'personal' space per fish and thereby increasing the aggressive behavior. For reference, tank dimensions are 24" long x 12" deep x 16" high.
All of my water parameters are good: 0 ammonia and nitrite, less than 5 nitrate, pH is between 7.8 - 8 and I am gradually bringing it down with peat granules in a mesh filter bag, GH 25 and KH about 125. I am using filtered water that I treat with Dr. Tim's First Defense with 20% weekly water changes. I have several silk plants in the tank (high enough to break line of sight a bit), a Christmas moss bridge, and some marimo moss balls. Filtering with a Marina S20 HOB and an internal sponge filter. Temp is 77 - 78.
So what would you fish experts suggest? Leave the tank as is with 5 cranky inhabitants? Or increase the load by 1 or 2 more glofish tetras to try and create more of a school and reduce aggression?
Thank you!
