laminated glass would be more expensive, but it wouldnt leak even it it did have a large crack,
i can understand why they are not made of toughened glass, because although it is very strong on the face, one bang on the edge and it would pop, into thousands of tiny pieces.

i made a nice tank the other day, my sister needed a bigger one due to over stocking, but wanted to keep her hood, the old tank measured (1'x2'x1') i made her a taller one (1'x2'x2') and i made it out of 4mm ordanary glass, but because its my first go at it, i made a wooden frame to surrond the tank, taking the pressure off the glass, it probably didnt need it, but its better to be safe than sorry :p

if i get the chance to make another i would consider making it from laminated 6mm glass, if there isnt a reason why you shouldnt use laminated

i just took a picture of it, it still needs some finishing off, the wood needs sanding and such, but i have tested it, i filled it right to the top lastinight all the water was still in it this morning, so the seal is ok

:p You could make them out of bullet resistant glass but then that will be very expensive

we have some of that in the factory, but not enough to make a fish tank, and i wouldnt be able to cut it anyway :p

so there isnt any reason why you cant make a tank out of laminated glass? i can get as much of that as i want, we cant sell it with scratches in, and mostly skip it, if its smaller than around 4 feet square

I really can not see any reason why you can't use laminated glass.

As long as it's thick enough - I wouldn't see why not either. Maybe the reason it's not used for regular tanks is that it's cost prohibitive? :dunno:

yep that would be my guess too, i'll use 6.4 mm PVB laminated glass (3mm glass 0.4mm plastic/glue resin 3mm glass) sandwich, you can also get it in self cleaning, sound proof, and uv proof flavours, not that i will bother with those because they are very expensive and i'd have to pay for those

Perhaps you should consider making them and flogging them on, ideal for those fishkeepers with kiddies.

Would also be a good idea for those with longer tanks 4ft+

If you get the glass out of the skips that's great business for you, even if you make a donation to your employers you could end up making a good few quid.

I have read and heard that they don't use saftey glass cuase of the flex in it. But that is just what people told me.
