We've been kicking around the idea of having a Livebearer Chat Night for a while now, and it is finally going to happen! It'll be a chance to talk with your fellow Livebearians, chat about your favorite fish, ask your questions, and learn a lot too. Nmonks, our favorite writer for PFK, TFH, etc., will be there to help you out with your rarer Livebearers (and Mollies!), helterskelter will help out with Rarer Livebearers as well, and dwarfgourami will add her great all-around knowledge. :good: Anybody can come, from 1 day of experience, to 50 years of experience (and more!). I imagine we can make it a mix that will apply to everyone.

We're planning on holding it around 6-8pm, EST, on Saturday, January 6th. Hopefully that won't be too late for the UKers, and too early for the West Coast. We can adjust the time if needed, but that's the plan right now.

It will be held in a separate chat room, #LivebearerChat. I'm told you can go into the normal chat room, and type /join #LivebearerChat and you will be there.

Please use the temporary link for chat, as it is currently down. Fish Forums Chat
To change your name, type /nick yournicknamehere

I hope to see you all there!

I'll be in if it's a good time for me as of work, I'm uk.

Chat room will be ok.

I'm into my rare livebearers and goodieads so I'll be willing to help out in them fields.

Helter

I'd prefer it if it was in another room... A night talking about fedders, sorry, livebearers doesn't appeal to me or most of the regular chat crew. I'd be happy to lend you #fishchat if you want a registered channel, if the chosen ones have registered nicknames I'll stick them on the auto-op list, if not, I'll probably be hanging around.

you say a time but I see no date :S

you say a time but I see no date :S

We're working out a date. I have a pretty busy schedule, and I need to coordinate with nmonks and DG too. I just didn't know if any of the people coming would prefer a weeknight, to a weekend, or vice versa. If no one really cares, then we'll just pick a date. I'll post it within the next day, or so.

Helter - Sounds good.

OohFeeshy - I'm usually in there from 7pm on, and maybe one to two people are in there, with nobody talking. I said Eastern Standard Time, so I'd think that'd be around 11pm-1am there? Are there that many people in at that time? I've hardly ever seen anyone, in my 3 years of chatting.

11pm may be a bit late for UKers, around 9-10pm GMT is fairly active with regulars and not too difficult for other UKers.

Hello OohFeeshy --

With respect, I'm not sure you're the target audience. I know there are people who see livebearers as nothing more than beginners' fish and feeder fish, but there are lots of people who see things differently. It's those people I'd like to see get involved in this "chat night".

My article in PFK this month is very much about this: livebearers are not just guppies, platies, swordtails, and mollies; they are not boring; and they are not just for beginners. No-one who has ever kept pike livebearers or giant sailfin mollies would call them boring, and four-eyed fish have to be among the weirdest oddballs on the market! Halfbeaks fight as violently as bettas, and goodeids can be just as aggressive as cichlids. Every year more and more unusual livebearers appear on the market, and most shops will get one or two oddball species in at some point during the year.

I'm hoping that this chat night will be of value to:
  • People who've suddenly found baby fish in their aquarium.
  • People who are keeping mollies and guppies but having problems with these so-called easy fish.
  • People who'd like to breed guppies and other livebearers in a more systematic way.
  • People who want to know how to create their own variety of fancy guppy or some other livebearer.
  • People who have hard, alkaline water and want to learn about interesting fishes suited to those conditions.
  • People who've seen oddball livebearers like halfbeaks and goodeids and want to learn more.
Looking forward to contributing, and hope we all have fun!

Let's try for Saturday the 6th of January. I can't do this Saturday, Neale can't do the 16th, and after that, it's the week before Christmas. How does the 6th work for everyone?

Hopefully, on Saturday, it is easier for the UKers to stay up a bit later, and easier for the USA members to come in. We could start it a bit earlier, say 5-8pm EST, but nobody has to stay the whole time. I probably will not be able to be there until 6pm, but that is fine by me. :)

it sounds fantastic. i'm in uk.
I've only just started keeping fish and the whole thing facinates me. I have platties and i think they're amazing little characters. (i'm shocked to know that people refer to them as feeders!) lol
but i guess its natures law!

11pm on a saturday will be fine, can come early from the pub ;)

So me spelling will be better then, than when I'm sober!!!

wife said sounds a good time and date , she will be there , can we have instructions as to how to get into the room etc etc

Saturday the 6th won't work with me. I am a nurse and I work weekends, and that is my weekend to work (3pm-11pm EST)
