My male betta is like a puppy at feeding time. He swims back and forth and up and down wildly and when I feed him pellets I have to do it carefully and one at a time or he'll be so hyper he won't see it and it'll sink to the bottom, uneaten. So tonight I go to feed him and he jumped! It scared the crap out of me! He didn't jump out of the tank but just up and back in. eek!! Now when I feed him I'll be afraid to feed him slowly like I usually do. Am I starving him? Is that why he acts like that??

btw I feed him hikari pellets and hbh betta bits. 3 pellets twice a day and every 2 or 3 days I substitute one feeding with frozen bloodworms.

No you're not starving him, he sounds very well looked after.

My first betta was like that, he would swim around madly and splash in the corner of the tank. Some are just like that. :D If you're worried that he'll go hungry 'cause he misses the pellets, don't be. As he picks around the tank bottom later, he'll find left-overs and eat them. :)

I like to dangle the longer frozen blood worms into their tanks, a bit above the water. They jump and nip it until I give it up.

Have you ever had to pick it up off the floor? I'm afraid that's what will happen. My daughter got a game for christmas where plastic bunnies bounce up and you catch them in a net. My husband thinks he should stand by with that net when I feed the fish.

LOL! love it when they get so excited that they miss the food :fun:

They should find it at the bottom later though. My females got a little excited a few weeks back and Scarlett landed on the floor after jumping up for a pellet  I only knew she'd jumped out because I heard her hit the wooden flooring. If I'd had carpet I doubt I would have heard her and my kitty would have had a snack :sly:

She fell 4 feet in all but she was ok and funny enough she's had better colouring since she did  and she's now the boss in the tank after being the underdog for ages :D

I'm always nervous now when feeding my bettas

They are in a 12 gallon so I always make sure to lure them out into the middle of the tank (it is divided) so if they do jump, they should be okay!
