I came home from college to see these two fighting, who knows how long they where at it. They where fin biting, body bitting, tail whipping, side nipping and everything. I finally decided to break them up after I noticed the black on the smaller one starting to phade, maybe scales being taken off? I dunno but they black has returned.

Also, notice on is darker and one is tanner on the back.. could that be a male and female fighting?

Yes, SAE's do fight, they are territorial and as they get bigger they get worse.

:/ how can something that shoals be territorial? :/ how odd.. wlel when they duke it out to the winner go the spoils.. :S I am not worrying about fish right now.. -_- college stress is enough.

Oh sorry lol, I was talking about CAE's it was late for me  How many do you have? Are you positive that they are SAE?

Pretty darn positive. :/ I researched the signs to look for and they have them all. I have 5 of them. they are usually peaceful and chase each other some time but they have never fought like that before. :X that is some harsh fighting.

I have kept SAEs for years. I have 5 that are 6 inches in my 75. WHile they are basically not agressive, like any other fish that live in groups, they will work out a pecking order. Every now and then one will challenge the next one up the line just to be sure the standings haven't changed. Also typical in thie sort of behavior is colors fading. Usually this is a sign of submission by the loser.

If you want to see a knock down drag out status fight, you should see clown loaches go at it. I have seen battles last for hours all over the tank with regular time outs between rounds.
