Hi...from time to time, people put posts/comments in this section about 'adding plants to their marine tank'. Well..here is a potential reason to NOT add them. I recently added a piece of Marshall Islands LR. Didn't think much of the new hitchhiker until today...when...I was looking at the tank and staring at it. Check out the before and after pix:

Yeah....marine tank is not much different than a FW tank....NOT!!!!!!

This appears to be a red macroalgae that is SLOWLING TAKING OVER THIS ROCK!. SH

Could have been worse - It could have been Xenia that was taking over and it would have to have been DYNAMITE you use to get rid of it

:p :p :p

Interesting that you say that Chac....I find it amazing how everyone wants to add xenia to their tank, when, it tends to take it over. I'll watch it 'pulse' in someone ELSE'S tank. Anyway, here are a few more closeups of this read type algae. SH

Looks interesting, but i bet it is choking the corals on the rocks it is growing...

time to break the tank down and give it a good scrub?

Well...I'm going to try and ID it first. Not quite sure yet...certainly, it is not out of control but definitely extending from where it has been. Funny thing..it probably is helpful with regards to nutrient export. I'd like to see if I can nail down an ID and then make an 'informed' decision before taking that piece of LR out. SH

OK...all my marine aquarist colleagues here.....tell me what you think....is this the ID?

Peyssonnelia squamaria

SH

Apparently the peysonnelia is a ;arger calcareous plating coral...so..no ID as of yet. SH
