Who can my Betta swim with?

I have a 5.5 gallon tank just bought yesterday and only One betta. I want to know if I can put other fish, what kind of fish, and how many , more to my tank?

I am extreme newbie so please help if you can Thnx guys

PS: Why is my betta always on the bottom of the tank not moving, and only when i stick my hand by the window he runs to the other side and sits still some more...Is it because he hates me or because the 0.5 gallon little tiny tank is to small for him.
Im gonna transfer it to the 5.5 gallon soon after I get some replies who can swim with him.

Some bettas prefer larger tanks and are unhappy in small tanks (the opposite is also true). I believe it's either the former or that it has been too stressed out on its journey to its new home.

Just keep the water in good condition and try changing its tank ASAP.

As for companions, you can't have too many. I'd say a few livebearers or some bottom feeders. Perhaps frogs and/or ghost shrimp would work too. Be careful when adding colorful fish, though, because the betta might think the colorful fish is either a betta female or male, which isn't a good thing.

Maybe get some cory cats to help clean up extra food. That will keep the tank cleaner
