So the petshop I work at has just got these in earlier this week.

I am rather keen on them, just trying to figure out whether I should get one or not for my 98L tank.

It's a Aqua El Econoline 70, I currently have 3 White Cloud Mountain Minnows, 1 Ancistrus Plec, 6 Julii Corydoras, 5 Glowlight Danios.

Would the Whiteseam and Ancistrus not get a long or would they be fine?

Also would the tank be too small once the Whiteseam reaches it's full size...

They are being sold for £16 I think it was, but that is without my 20% discount.

Which species we talking about?, I'm presuming by the correct name it will be L183

Firstly what are the dimensions of the tank?.

To adding them to a tank with common ancistrus or other of plecs, i would advise against, these i found to be one of the most aggression plecs ive kept, killed 2 commons in a 5 foot tank over night and a female 183 aswell. It's not just males which are aggressive, both sexes tend to have an evil streak and not only mine but alot of other 183 keepers have had very similar experiences with aggression.

I would personally say that a 98 litre tank would be ok but only ok i wouldn't 'personally' house one in anything less than a 3 foot tank (yours may well be 3 foot).

They will require alot of hiding places and plenty of wood, prefer extremely low PH but aslong as yours isn't sky high then you should be fine

Full size for these can be in excess of 8 inches, i had a few males which were 9 or so but they usually max out around 6-7ish.

Stunning fish but the aggression i found was to much to risk adding other species of plec to there tank.

Yes it is the L183.

Dimensions are 70cm x 35cm x 40cm.

I'm presuming there going to be young and at a small size?. I would say at adult size the tank is a little on the small side and in that size tank i would definitely say no to other plecs in the tank.

At the moment with them being so small then they will be fine as long as an upgrade is on the cards, if not then unless you plan on them been the only bottom dwellers and only having a pair then the tank is to small and i would advise against getting them.

I would only get the one, and I have a Juwel Rekord 96 sitting in the spare room waiting to be set up, which is 10cm longer.

Sounds even better mate, the bigger the tank the better and you could have a pair with the possibility of breeding in the future. I prefer having species only tanks with plecs so im a little biased there but a nice shoaling fish potentially could liven the tank up if a species only tank isn't your thing.

Other than that 1 would be fine in the other tank but as the plec grows you will probably find some aggression from the 183 towards your common BN's so keeping them separate would be the better option :good:

Kinda keen on the Green Phantom we've got in too!

Think there may be something wrong with my lil ancistrus.

Absolutely stunning and miss mine quite alot lol, these need even bigger tanks due to getting slightly, sometimes considerably bigger and a much heavier bodied fish. I actually prefer blue phantoms and again miss my group of them also... oh the downside to moving to smaller quarters ah? lol

Shall need to see what's wrong if anything, with my Ancistrus before adding any new fish.

The green phantom is going for £40, and he's medium sized.

Also got a Clown Plec, Peckolita Vittata, and a Inspector, oo forgot the Red Rusty too:)

What's up with the BN?, you could post in the emergency section. There very good at diagnosing illnesses :good:

£40 sounds reasonable for a L200 at that size, clowns are 10 a penny and IMO not a nice looking species. L15's are quite a nice species and there markings can be stunning. The inspector?, this species is mistaken so many times it's confusing to decipher which species nowadays lol.... ill guess at L102, lovely looking plec, stays relatively small.

As long as the tank setup suits, the inspector and vittata would be a better option than the 183 but 183's are stunning things while young :) :)

How can BN kill other fish, especially armoured ones like common plecs? Surely plecs have sucker mouths not teeth so how do they bite?

??? a little confused by your question lol, thats like saying how could a cichlid kill another cichlid or how does a guppy kill another guppy both for most don't have teeth but still can kill.

Plecs do have teeth and some species have very large sharp teeth, killing amongst plecs is very very common especially when you have aggressive species, not only as ive mentioned do they have teeth but there suckers are very powerful, enough to cause damage to skin, eyes fins etc etc and constant damage/harrasment leads to infections, stress to mention a few.

Plecs may be armour plated as you say but that isnt as thick or tough as you might think.

So basically yes plecs kill plecs, territory is often the cause but ive had many occurrences of females been killed while mating, again a very very common occurrence.

Hope that answered your questions, tbh i thought the answer would have been quite self explanatory but ive given an answer anyways :good:

Just to answer this separate .....

How can BN kill other fish, especially armoured ones like common plecs?

I was referring to common BN's that my male 183 killed or one of my male 183 anyways... however if you had adult 183's or common BN's they could quite easily kill small juvi common plecs as much as they could any other and vice versa, it's just 183's have been one of the most aggressive plecs ive kept and as ive mentioned many other 183 owners will give similar encounters.

The BN has a light spot on the top of it's back, almost looks as if it's scales have been removed :/

Not sure if it's fungus or not though.

I'm not the best with illnesses but posting in the emergency section probably will shed some light.

Could he have just scraped it on some wood or rock?

He looks fine now, might've just been a water mark when I quickly caught a glimpse of it lol.
