I got a new digital thermometer and whilst I was fixing it I noticed a white film over everything in the tank. Its not very thick & i didnt even notice it before I disturbed the water. My tank is fishless cycling with no plants. It Just has gravel & bogwood in it.

What is this strange lifeform I have discovered?

is it on the rubber things in the
tank

I had the same thing, I was told that it was a fungus growing on the releasing agent on the soft mouldings and harmless

i think it was me that told you
i dont think its anything to worry about

It is on the rubber suction cups & the rubber bits on my heater. Duno about the filter as I am trying not to mess with the tank too much.

its nothing to worry about you could always remove
them wash them in warm water and put them back in
if you don't like the look of it

I had always been told that the grayish white film that gets on the silicone suction cups in new tanks was an example of biofilms (from some of the heteromorphic bacteria rather than the autotrophs) but recently someone on the forum mentioned that it might be a particular fungus that likes the silicone. Regardless of what it actually is, its pretty well established among the members that it belongs in the large group of harmless stuff you see at the early stages of new tanks and goes away or its own accord or is easily cleaned.

Hope that helps a little :)

good thing it's harmless!

noticed this last night when I bumped my airstone and had to rearrange it, the hose feeding it was covered in white fuzz which then dislodged and made my tank look like pea soup. got the siphon out to suck up the big chunks and left it to the filter to catch the rest.. the fish didn't seem to mind.

nowhere else in the tank, just on the rubber hose. i have a heater in there too and the suction cups don't seem to be affected by it, different rubber compounds perhaps.
