Please read this topic I made in the catfish forum (the pictus cat was the first to get sick).

http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=59280

It has spread to almost all my fish now and I want to stop it but I don't know how.

I have turned up the heat and added salt to the tank.

Please help,

I'm treating white spot/ ich right now too. I put in treatment, victoria green (malachite green works too). The ones that were really sick died, some got better. I'm adding salt and melafix now, to help them get over the sickness. let me know how yours do!

I went to the aquarium shop today cause my fish have white spots and fin rot, :( he adviced me to use TRI-SULFA tablets and turn the temp. up to 28.
I have a 90 litre tank so he said to put 3 tablets and 10 teaspoons of salt then after 3 days to do a 1/4 water change and add 3 more tablets. He also said not to add more salt in the next few water changes so the salt can get back to normal.

Hope this helps anyone with white spots or fin rot.

salt and malachite green dont mix well it will prolong the spots.
you should use one or the other. if using mallachite green you have to turn off your uv light and cover the tank with a towel or blanket. this slows the parasite down so it cant see its prey meaning its free swimming for longer and gets caught by the meds quicker.
the salt treatment is 1.5 level teaspoons per gallon. leave your fish in it for 10 minutes then return to tank. do this for 3 days.
for your catfish i think its half dose for the mallachite green. remember to remove carbon.

A search on this board will turn up lots of advice on Ich :)

Just a note, you need to be sure that your fish are Ok about salt before adding it...Corys and Loaches are not.

I had a mild outbreak a month ago, which I thankfully caught early. Because I have scaleless fish in the tank (Corys, Loaches, Khulis and an aquatic frog) I could not add salt (since it burns their skin) and I also had to half dose the medication.

Be sure to read the instructions on the meds, make sure they are safe for all of your fish, and take care when using salt. The temperature increase I will go along with.

As a side note, a couple of my Cardinals lost finnage during the Ich so I added Melafix. It cured the fin loss, but unfortunately killed a Betta (who had otherwise escaped the white spot) I only found out in retrospect that Melafix may harm Betta :( I had no other losses from the Ich outbreak, but we need to bear in mind that Ich is like a common cold to fish...it is not always the killer, the secondary infections are when the immune systems are already compromised by Ich.

Good luck!
