During feeding time today I noticed one of my female platies has what looks like white slime/fungus on her face. It's not like cotton, it just looks like something was smeared on her face. Any idea what it is?

She has had this before, but it went away in a day. I don't plan to treat it unless it turns out to be very dangerous, I'm just curious as to what it is.

Also, if you want to know what happened with my biological filter crash, everything worked ou and I didn't lose a fish.

my 8" bkg had that in the wee hours of the morning and died before afternoon came. i was like  . there was also this white slime thing on his body and around near his mouth. help!

I've noticed that when fish develop columnaris it can sometimes start off as a white slime covering parts of the fishes body, columnaris can occasionally be treated and cured with just clean water quality if the fish has a good imune system however its better to help aid the fish with an anti-external bacterial med too to help make sure the disease is completely wiped out in the tank and doesn't return  .

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's columnaris now, as it's starting to get fluffy.

I'll give it another day before I treat for anything, this fish has fought it off before.

Just an update:

It went away on it's own like I thought it would, bu it left behind an open wound, so I'm dosing with Melafix as a preventative against anything else.
